I have been a car guy al My life I am 74 years old and have not heard of this one, That is what I like to see is something that I have never even known it existed.
@briquetaverne18 күн бұрын
I'm a couple of years older than you and over the years I worked in a few repair garages, a Pontiac Dealership, a Subaru dealership and used car lots. Like yourself, I've heard of or seen odd cars come and go. Crosby's, American Austin, Frazers, Essex, LaSalle, Willys and a lot of old American Brands. I'd heard of Vikings, Oaklands, Rockne, Erskine, Tucker and more. What surprised me was just a dozen years ago after I'd retired, I learned there was a sports car called a Jet which was a sort of hotrod Panhard looking car with a Lincoln V-12 in an open car design built for the Californian crowd. Like Yourself this Playboy is again something I didn't know existed. It's always cool to discover something new that's old.

I'm 64, never heard of a Playboy but I learned to drive in a Nash Metropolitan around the fields on our East Tennessee farm. I think it was 1962, white and yellow convertible and it sat on the farm for years till my day sold it for $125.
@What.its.like.7 сағат бұрын
@@Jeffrey-t8g that’s awesome. I’m glad that you learned about a car that you never knew about. I absolutely love Nash Metropolitan. What did you think of yours?

@@What.its.like. When it was newer we use to go for "Sunday Drives" in it on warm summer days. It had a lot of unique features but it was suffering from time and weather and my dad had put one new convertible top on it a few years before, I think it was from Sears. One bad thing with the sloppy way the shifter worked it was easy to hang the gears up and had to go under the hood to free the shifter. It would set in the field and still start even though it received no care and wasn't maintained. The guy that bought it I think was a car dealer and was supposed to fix it up and restore it. That was over 50 years ago so no telling what happened to it.

I knew about this car but had only seen little black & white pictures of it years ago. This is the best coverage I have ever seen and the only up close photos. I had no idea how good this car is. The dash is amazing for then and the swing arm pedals were way ahead of their time.

I remember seeing one of these around town at least 40 years ago. More to the point, I did business with a machine shop where the owner claimed his father bought the rights to produce and the plans for Playboy cars at auction. As proof, he showed me the plans.

Well, at least I knew of this car, thanks to a 1966 Motor Trend article. First time I've actually seen a decent picture of one, tho. It's not a bad looking small car, and the roof is pretty cool! That particular car is very well done. WYR= Crosley (because my grandfather ran a Crosley dealership way back when) and a toss-up between the SAAB and the Davis. Sorry to hear about the website being taken down. Any time you lose a good reference source, especially about something as obscure as this Playboy, it just makes it that much harder to find the info you need. It seems like Hershey and Greenfield Village gave you some really cool vehicles to cover!

Hi Jay! Ahhh. . .the Playboy! NEAT little cars and very rare! When I was a youngster a couple from over in Anderson (Indiana) brought their little red convertible to the local 4th of July parade. Very cool! A similar little car was produced by the Keller company in Alabama. They had more body styles, though. That was an off-shoot of the earlier Bobbi-Car which originated in California. WYR, One 1950 Nash Rambler. Two 1948 Davis (SO funky and even MORE rare!)

The featured car varies from the ones seen elsewhere in the way the hood and trunk meet the fenders. It's like the hood and trunk weren't closed on the red one but it doesn't look like they'd close any further. Those details look bad but the rest of the car (and the others shown) look quite stylish to me. It's a good looking car, especially the wagon, and the way the top folds is super-cool. The dash is superb, the hood ornament an airplane fuselage, and the bumpers look solid but sleek. You're still killing me with the WYR, all cars I like so choosing is tough. I'll go with the 50 Nash but the Playboy would have won if the body was like the others shown. And the Saab is quite nice but the Playboy looks better. Honorable mention to the Crosley HotShot as a true sports car and the Davis for rarity.

I know what happened to one of the "lost" Playboys. I live near Buffalo. Fifty plus years ago there was a junkyard on Union Rd in Cheektowaga, NY (a suburb of Buffalo) and they experienced a fire gutting many of their junk cars. One of the burned up hulks was a Playboy. For years you could go and visit its remains. Everything's long gone now. Ironically, it's still a recycling yard, but no old cars are present anymore to my knowledge. Crush. Crush. Crush.

Although I do really love the face of the SABB the windshield is hideous. On the other hand the windshield on the Playboy is ahead of its time and sportier. The Playboy bumper doesn't fit flush to the car like the SABB and looks like a lazy rip off design from a much larger car scaled down to fit the Playboy. The grill of the Playboy is a rip-off from another car to I forget what but the grill is not petite enough for the car. SABB grill looks better than Playboy. The SABB has a better seating position motor and suspension. The Playboy Windshield and Convertible hard top is Amazing but by the 80's the SABB was the popular car to drive in the city Traffic of NYC. The 1980's SABB looking 10x better than a Subaru its only competition for a Urban Rally heritage car in city traffic.
