Totally agree with leaving the castings as they are. A good clean up, smooth some edges, but leave the surface as it has a story behind it. Making it look all "purty and shiny" is good for the Tonka resto guys but some pieces really need to let the story continue. Very nice work.

I agree with you in that I may not have the best tools, or even the right ones, but I do know how to use what I have. I also love how you have a great respect for wrought iron in its raw state. I have seen restorations on other KZbin channels where they get rid of the casting marks and they are polishing them to a high shine and to me it ruins the character of the piece. Thanks for respecting the work of the original makers.

I work a lot with thin copper in my hobbies. A technique I use is gluing the copper to a thin (1/8") thick plywood that I get from a national chain hobby store with CA/Super/Crazy glue. It makes everything from drilling to polishing easier and when you're done just drop your work in acetone for about 10 minutes and the copper comes off the plywood. Another thing that I find very helpful is Mr. Pete's hand vise. I've built two one in steel with V Groves to hold round object and a second one in aluminum . You can't beat them when working with small screws or items.

I got a couple of the really small slide spring scales made in the late 1800's at an auction for my parents when I was 19-20. Really just cleaned them up like you did and gave em to my mom. They've been in her kitchen with baskets hanging from them for 20 years now. I'll get em back one day, and I'll probably use them to hang my cast iron.

Hi Justin, just restored my grandad's Salter Butcher scales (he was a butcher), but this one is a much larger rectangular type which I gave an oily rag treatment to the case and polished up the brass face and a lick of black laquer to the hooks and a spray of clear poly to protect the brass. I didn't dismantle the scales as they still work fine and still have the anti tamper stud in place on the face. Yours is a nice resto, good job

The Good of the Land: Thank you for the video, I just discovered your channel. I like that you talk with your audience and guide us through what you are doing. This format is so much better than a pure ASMR, which I like as well. This leads me to the reason I am writing you, do you have any advice for flattening out the bottom of a brass jam pot? I know that it should be flat and not concave as it is now.
@TheGoodoftheLand
@TheGoodoftheLand 2 жыл бұрын
If you have access to the top you can rest it on a hard surface like a metal plate and reshape it using a dowle and hammer. You may need to heat it up to aneal the brass so it doesn't Crack. 600 to 800 degrees is the safe spot. Let it cool then set it on the flat surface and gently reshape it by tapping with the dowle and hammer.

As much as I understand your desire to keep the wrought iron original, I do think that the pitting on the hook and chain do make it less desirable to use as a meat hook. There is just too many nooks and crannies for bacteria to hide in versus had you smoothed, at least, the hook and the first link or two of the chain. In my humble opinion. You always do wonderful work. I enjoy your channel for the way you celebrate a piece's history as you restore it. Thanks for the video.

+Ryan Catarius That's a great point. I suppose if whoever ends up owning it does want to use it for meat they can give it a quick polish. Those pits are big enough to grind hamburger. They have a unique look. Wish I would have got a close up.

Salter are a well known brand for accurate scales, used in many shops even today. I agree that you have to use the tools you have, but use the best for the job, though i didn't like the big screwwdriver bit, ground on a small wheel, but too close to the tipp, so it's tapered withing the screw head, more likely to slip out. I bought 2 of those mats for a project (rubber seal), only used part of one, so the rest of that one i use a small square of it for mixing epoxy, let the residue set and just peel it off ;)

Just my two cents, but it's something my grandfather and an old bmx guy taught me but a cheap alternative to thread locker is a cheap bottle of marine grease. Hell when I maintenance fishing reels and restore old fishing reels I use cheap marine grease for the internals but I also grease bolts and reel screws cuz the grease keeps threads on anything from corroding and acts like a thread locker.

In my view, you just destroyed a near 200 year old patina, could have repaired the dial hand (at the most) and kept it original, and lost every bit of its historical value. As an English woman my heart was broken just watching it's working past and the evidence of its industrial heritage being eroded. I could cry.

Someone should make a lamp out of that and a basket, in some way that doesn’t touch that other than as a chain to hold the basket, then it can be a near middle of the kitchen piece and a scale like you say, but have a use all the time too, the issue is where the lights go and what gets added on to make them fit with it, do they hang from the top and then it’s basically just adjacent to a light, or is the basket a chandelier?

I don't like it when someone takes an old tool and tries to make it look like it did when it came from the factory, or worse better than when it came from the factory by filing down casting marks. This scale did not just come from the factory. In nearly 200 years how many shops has it hung in? How many butchers have used it? How many tons of meat as it weighed? The dings and dents and pitting have been honestly won through honest toil and it should get credit for that. It should wear those marks with honor.
