My grandfather was Red Barbers engineer from 1950-1954. This is wonderful.

Very excellent audio quality! A real treat. Even better than a bowl of your favorite Post cereal.

This is the man who taught Vin Scully his craft. And by Red's estimation, Vin learned it well.

Amazing that up until two years ago, there had only been Red and Vin as chief Dodger announcers since Jackie Robinson.

The Dodgers have won 4 in a row since their thumping by the Braves on 5/13 so they are now 15-8 on their way to an 89-65 second place finish. the Pirates are 13-13, (after a 6-2 start), and would collapse to a 57-96, last place finish., where they would be in five of the six years from 1950-55.

I wonder how you could not enjoy this broadcast. Oh, well, it's only 4 thumbs-down. My dad took me to Ebbets Field when I was very young. The Old Redhead gets the flavor of the place.

I believe Gene Hermanski was best known for the suggestion that all players should wear number 42 to honor Jackie Robinson after he almost died tragically in 1950 in Cincinnati. Of course, now every April 15th everyone wears #42. Vin Scully used to tell the story dur-ing live Dodgers games, and yes, he was there in 1950!

Post certainly gets it's money's worth with these broadcasts. They seem to be the only sponsor and the broadcasters were on every second- no commercial breaks. They did them themselves. Oh, and I'll bet Sugar Crisp was not what Connie Desmond had for breakfast...

He is probably sitting there quietly. Vin would have been 22 and Red didn't like giving up innings to Desmond. That is what drove Ernie Harwell away, opening the spot for Vin.

I did not know there was a rule that lights could not be turned on during the late games of a DH till 1950 that is so strange because all the parks (but Wrigley) had lights by then
@cottagechskitty6 жыл бұрын
It couldn't be turned on at all!! I.e. if it was a day game, the lights couldn't go on at all, even if darkness was coming. Quite a few games were suspended due to darkness when the stadium had lights that could've been used
