1950 Betty Crocker's Picture Cook Book Flip Through + Review | Vintage Cookbooks Episode 1

Today I am reviewing Betty Crocker 's Picture Cook Book Binder from 1950. I recently went to a Church Rummage Sale and purchased several vintage cookbooks, including a good number of vintage Betty Crocker cookbooks. I thought it would be fun to dive a little deeper into the cookbooks and do a flip through so you can get the general idea of how it is laid out in case you may want to add any of these to your own collection.

The Betty Crocker Big Red Cookbook was the cookbook I learned to cook out of. My mother bought it in 1952 and I still have it. It was the first picture cookbook and became a instant top seller. You will enjoy cooking from it. It is highly collectable with cookbook collectors.

I acquired the Betty Crocker cookbook at a thrift store last summer and made the Raspberry drink that's in the Beverage section. It was delicious. I invited a few friends for lunch last fall and every recipe came out of 1950s cookbooks. Totally fun and delicious. Looking forward to your fall vintage cooking adventures!

I received the red and white book for a wedding gift 45 years ago this Saturday! I still have it and will give it to my first grandaughter who went to college for patisary. Love your videos. I love all old cookbooks. So much to learn and rediscover. As a chef I can see where foods began and how our tastes have changed through the decades. I hope you eventually found out what Philadelphia Pepper Pot Soup is! It has nothing to do with Beef steak or peppers! It's beef tripe (cow stomach) diced and cooked for hours until tender, then simmered with vegetables and black pepper. Sometimes you add stew beef or veal, but often it's just the vegetables and tripe. It actually used to be popular! Obviously not so much anymore! Lol 🤣

Love the pictures in cookbook. Makes you wonder if people entertained like that for real. Beautifully displayed foods. I have a home economics book from 1962. Covers everything from cooking to choosing furnishings for the home! Beautiful food and lovely mid century furnishings in all the pics. It is a book that I treasure.

I recently found a vintage bread cookbook at a cowboy museum. I can't wait to try the recipes and I, too, am fascinated with how they cooked back in the day. Although I work outside the home, I'm a 1950s housewife at heart and enjoy cooking and baking from scratch at least once a week. I look forward to your upcoming cookbook recipe series!

I have this cookbook, but I have a reproduction of it that was published about 10 years ago by Rodale Publishing. (The 1950 edition that you have is the very first Betty Crocker cookbook ever printed.) It's very interesting and fun to see how much American cooking has changed. I noticed that people were not scared to eat raw eggs more than 70 years ago. Nearly all of the frosting recipes contain a raw uncooked egg. (Why?) They were also obsessed with raisins, nuts, dates, and prunes in the dessert recipes. They would put these items in everything. --And some of the main course dishes are almost inedible by today's standards, especially the section on aspics. How would you like chicken or beef encased in beef or tomato-flavored Jell-O?

That was fun! My mom had the red and white plaid one from when she got married in 1950 and I've had three of them since 1975. It's so interesting to see the changes in our American eating habits. I believe that her 1950 book had only a couple of Italian recipes as that was considered pretty exotic in mid-America then. My 1975 copy had Italian, but little Mexican food, etc.

I left you a long comment on your other Cookbook Vid - Just wanted to mention if you like vintage cookbooks, you might want to look for: The Whitehouse Cookbook (first publ in 1887 & several editions since), The Searchlight Cookbook; usually black cover and The American Woman's Cookbook - first publ in 1938). Great vids! :)

You talked about cookie jars. I have an old cookie jar that’s been passed down through the years. It was my grandmother’s. It’s an elephant. I’m sure it’s at least 125 years old. I hide my money in it.😊

wow, I love that cookbook. it is so picture perfect and so much illustrations. my daughter made a homemade ice cream cake which was delish and homemade icing. that cookbook is a gem! they don't make them like that anymore. we need to bring back eating etiquette. lololololo I love soup as well. thanks for showing us the cookbook and going through it.

I have diabetes and sugar, flour, root veggies, bread, etc. can raise my bs a lot. I want to learn how to cook (I don't know how) but don't know if there are there recipies and pictures that could help me ? I find these take me back to childhood. Some flours I can substitute things with- I just don't know what can be subsituted. Have to keep carbs down and protein up... I eat meat, salads,, bacon, eggs, etc

I have the bc 1950s and the 1961 version with the pretty colors. I like the way the recipes are set up in the 1950s version. They are reminiscent of the joy of cooking. I learned to cook from the 1961 pretty picture one though. Frankly, I do not like most of the recipes. I mean herring and apples never sounded appetizing to me. What is really cool about these cookbooks are the little bits of information recorded by some recipes.

Used duct tape in cool patterns or simple brown packing tape to fix the Spine...

You may want to find a library book tape as it doesn’t get gooey like duct tape can.

A wonderful way in the story they tell is to pass on the history and then the recipe is the way to understand the recipe, I don't know if that makes sense.

A 70 yr old cookbook cover has "flaws"? (LOL) At 73 I lived during that era, and trust me the ole girl has a few flaws as well!!

Looked up the Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book binder copy. It may be a first edition, copyright 1950. Published by McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., and General Mills, Inc. 463 pages. One of America’s most famous cookbook. the post I saw was selling for 75$ ! Nice find 😀❤️

Grocery stores didn’t really start until after WW2 there was the neighborhood store, but nothing like we have today. So baking was stir a necessity for many homemakers. My grandmother talked about all the bread she baked on a daily basis. And you’re right it needs to be passed down. I met a 12 year old who didn’t know how to use a can opener

I think the red cook book was the first edition. It is a fantastic go to for everything into. Fallow the directions its great every time. I feel its the best first cook book anyone could get... In the white 2nd edition from the 60s the resapés are maybe "healthier" but disappointing. Its best used to fix a wobbly table.

My mom had this book & we can’t find it 😢. Seems many ppl today need these kinds of cook books! First shows you basics (boil an egg), how to boil potatoes and sauté onions! Hers was a 1961 version and had red and white “checkered pattern” on cover. If anyone finds one please reply here. So wish schools would bring back “home Ec) as helped me but like many programs decided not needed (yes they are)! If made your own bread know what’s in it (not cellulose)! Ty for showing can still learn if want to do so!

My wife has a 1950 Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book, 1st Edition, second printing. Pages 251 through 270 are inserted upside down. Obtained from her Mother the original owner. Wonder if this has any value.

My mom had Better Crocker when I was in high school....early 1960's. I enjoyed trying recipes. One favorite over the years is the quick bread streusel coffee cake. 8 x 8 pan put half batter in. A layer of cinnamon brown sugar.....rest of batter and top with rest of streusel mixture and bake. Really easy to make and you always have the ingredients on hand...so if someone drops in for coffee you can serve them a delicious warm treat.
