This vintage Omega watch has seen better days and it needs a good restoration. This 1950's omega watch has a great case size for a vintage watch and this is what I liked when I first saw it. I will try to give this vintage watch a second life after a good service. Hope you will enjoy the restoration

I love vintage watches because they are so well made, elegant dress watches were every day watches then. I like thin watches which were the watch designer’s greatest challenge for decades, modern Omegas are thick in comparison. Watch movements were at their zenith in the 1950s and 1960s , before the “ quartz crisis “

Very nicely done and narrated I can't get over how they were able to design and manufacture such amazing time pieces with minuscule parts 100+ years ago. No CAD, no computer aided manufacturing, just mechanical machinery. Amazing. That's one of the main reasons I love vintage watches and clocks. We see people making replicas these days using CNC machines and electronically guided lathes and we're amazed (at least I am). Can you image how they did it in the Waltham factory in the late 1800s when they didn't even have electricity. Thanks for sharing

I watch videos made by watchmakers and watch collectors since quite some time now. I like to discover all these classic movements, so precisely and beautifully engineered. Vintage watches are my favorites even if modern watches can be interesting too. I Usually find vintage watches more beautiful, more elegantly designed, and I admire the fact that they can run smoothly and accurately some 70 or 80 years or even more after having been made. I recently discovered your channel and was pleased to see a frenchman making these videos, as most of the time watchmaking videos are made by english or american people. Keep up the good job !

Superb this Omega, I like vintage because in addition to being prettier in my eyes than the recent ones, they bear witness to the past and the quality of objects from that era. The designs and dimensions of watches from those eras were just perfect. In addition to all this at that time the brands were for many independent and did not belong to large groups.

Excellent work on your part, and well narrated., thank you. I have a centre second Bumper from c1952. (Omega Seamaster S/N 124 384 481 Caliber 351 Bumper, 17 J). Back in the late seventies, an older cousin, now deceased, had this old watch that he had pulled the inners out of. He suggested that I might be interested in seeing it. He had bought it in 1952 but seems to be a 1948 model. He plunked the movement with a missing minute and second hand in front of me. Where is the rest of it, I asked. He went off looking back in the drawer and came back with a case covered with a tarlike substance and the case back. I had never seen a bumper and shook it, To my astonishment it started running. You can have it, he said. When I got home, after setting the hour hand to the correct hour, I wound it up and left it overnight . The next morning I saw that it had kept time, so set about scraping the tar off what turned out to be a lovely gold-filled case. We had "a local watchmaker" so off I went to see if he could find a case ring, crystal and hands and other missing parts and restore it. He did, although the second hand is a bit short. The dial shows its age, but has a lovely antique look. The gold fill was worn on the high wear points but it still looks lovely. On the night table it kept around + 2 sec/day. I checked it recently and it is still +- 5 sec a day, but I won't wear it until that 45 year service is refreshed. You can see why your comment was of such interest to me.

Well, mon Ami, I love vintage watches, because they are the paradigm of the piece that comes from a time in which a lot of things were more real. You had a tool that could be elegant at the same time, but a real tool to measure time nevertheless. It’s not that there are not those things today, you have them and better with today’s technology, but also there is the pretentiousness of luxury above everything, as if the most important part it’s what did you paid for this or that piece. And you are valuable if you have a Rolex, you are not if you have a Casio. So I love watches that come from a time where it was not like that. And by the o way, another Job Fantastique. Merci Beaucoup for the beauty of your craft.

Exactement, you have said it, my friend. The diffference between price and value, and so you have snobs surrounding you, and it goes the root of the word in your beautiful language, it all becomes “sans noblesse”. Merci Beaucoup once again.

Fantastic restoration! I have an Omega automatic caliber 491 that it would love to have a restoration like you did to this current watch. the movement looks so complicated like taking apart a car engine.
@FrenchWatchCollector

Yes it can looks complicated but with time you will master it. If you want to do it yourself, don't do it on an Omega for the first time. Practice with a cheaper watch first

Great video as usual. Vintage watches have so much character and look fantastic. I like the size and the dial detail, to me they are timeless and look more expensive than what you can get them for these days. Bonus is if it is a non runner and you can get them going again, very rewarding and adds a personal connection to the watch and reviving history.

Thank you again for your videos. Always love your details you provide in your services. Question after Epilame do you run the escapement before you lube the pallets? Some suggest to do so to remove a line of Epilame for the oil to reside? Thank you again.
@FrenchWatchCollector
@FrenchWatchCollector Жыл бұрын
Before oiling the palet fork I make it moves with power in the watch to see if it is clicking left and right. The escape wheel is obviously turning when you do this. I do the oiling of the pallet after this

Restoring vintage watches is the antithesis of today’s habit of using things until they break, and then throwing them away. These are beautiful instruments that were designed and built to last for generations- bringing a non-functioning watch back to life is pure joy!

A beautiful and interesting film as usual. I like that you are describing what you are doing and that you mention al parts by name, it makes it interesting and educational. I’m in the learning process and are practicing on cheap watches, I admire your skill not so much fiddling as I. A question: Do you wash the assembled balance wheel without the shock jewels assembled? My concern is how to clean the pivot on the balance wheel? I try to avoid manual cleaning on the balance staff. I have always been interested in clock and mechanical watches, each timepiece has its soul and history. It would be wonderful to be able to give life and to maintain the ones I have.

Every time I watch a video of a 200/300/500 series being serviced I am amazed at how good the movement looks. Modern watches do look nice inside but they are no match for vintage watches in good condition. And also, I can afford to buy vintage watches but will never afford new Omegas!
