The 1940's and 50's into the early 60's was a different time in America pride and patriotism was strong in this country. When John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, I felt that change the attitude of the America public once the shock wore off. Thanks, David, for creating your documentary on Sputnik, Mania.

Even in the 70’s as a kid, and the 80’s as a teen, I built and launched model rockets, a lot of us did. Space travel was still in the news, I remember the first shuttle flights, Skylab falling and on to the ISS. But over the past 2 decades we’ve lost that fire, 9/11 really put an end to it.

The internet put an end to it. Teens today are indoors texting, tweeting. Or on Facebook and TikTok.

I was also one of those kids in the 70's launching rockets. I launched a mouse several times and was in the local newspaper twice, along with my friends who served as my "crew". I remember one mouse had babies the day after her launch. I had no idea she was pregnant! All the babies were just fine though.

@deltatango5765 Can you imagine launching a mouse on a model rocket today? If word got out to the media, you would be arrested for cruelty to animals.

It sure is difficult to calculate, for real, the damage 9/11 did. I believe you when you say 9/11 affected rocket science 💙

@@MicahScottPnD in hindsight it seems to have affected quite a bit, at least from what I can see. It seems that we, as a country, focused inwards more than outwards and seem to have lost the desire to look beyond ourselves. Not to mention the cost of creating massive new government agencies and waging war for nearly 2 decades. Think of all the things that money could have gone for and all the lives that would still be around to reap the rewards.

Very cool Mr Hoffman. I've never seen or heard about the rocket Boys. Thank you🎉

When I was 12, I started building my own rocket kits in 1976. The company was Estes Industries. I build small rockets. Three stage rockets. Even a big rocket model of the Saturn 5. They all launched. What do 12 years old or teenagers do today? Nothing. They stay indoors texting, tweeting. Or on Instagram or TikTok. Waste of time.

Is it their fault? Why do they do that? What went wrong?

This reminds me of an anecdote about Werner Von Braun, the former nazi rocket scientist and eventual head of NASA. When he was a child in Weimar Germany in the 1920’s, he basically attached rockets to a soapbox derby style car and blasted himself down his city streets, much to the chagrin of the by standing crowds.

To me, solving space travel without solving life back home on earth is a dangerous proposition. I focused heavily on it, i suppose, around the time Spacex began (2002, description says?). The idea of taking unsolved diseases and shooting them to other planets? Quite scary! Ive been treating the issue with kids gloves all these years. 💙

There are many wonderful people in America but we all must come back to God and his teachings in a massive way. Loving our families with fidelity is what God teaches and will bless abundantly when we do.

An imaginary friend in the sky is not what will change the world. A lot less abuse, tax evasion and corruption may help. And religious zealots are a gigantic part of the reason that war, hatred and evil persist in society.

Being religious doesn't make you a good person, being non religious doesn't make me a bad person. But being decent human beings because that's sensible does. Living in fear of eternal damnation won't stop bad people from doing bad things. How many horrific atrocities are committed by seemingly pious sheep happen on a daily basis? Just be a good person and teach ACTUAL good values. Not through fear and suffering, through love and decency. Religion is the number one reason for war. Stop it. X
