I just love those classic Chevrolet transmission sounds that come out of that three speed manual transmission, especially second gear. Like listening to music! Just turned 70, and my dad had a few of these cars ranging from 1941 special deluxe coupe to a 1954 Chevy Bel Air. Brings back memories!

I love it ! I bought one in 1963 for $150 and kept it for five years. Like a complete fool I sold it ! Wish I still had it as it was a real good machine. Replaced the front breaks and the cylinders on each wheel and master cylinder. Put new plugs and points in it. Changed oil and filter every 3,000 miles and oil in air filter about once per year. Replaced one taillight. Great machine.

Back in 1973 I had a chance to buy a 1951 Chevy, just like yours, but had two doors. It had only 21,000 original miles, and was in really dream shape, being in a garage most of those years. The price was only $250. I had no place to store it, so I did not buy it. What a huge mistake on my part. It had a straight inline 6 cylinder engine and a standard 3 speed transmission. I absolutely loved the transmission sound, especially in second gear. It sounded like an old milk truck of that time period. Really wish I bought that car then!

Just remember, it is a 64 year old car. There could be many things wrong with it. If it has the original engine, and if it has never been rebuilt, check for a cracked engine block, warped head, leaky head gasket, and check for burnt valves. With engine idling, hold a peice of paper to the tail pipe. If the paper makes a popping sound, it has burnt exhaust valves. If it sucks the paper into tail pipe, it has burnt intake valves. Also check the oil level dipstick. If you see bubbles mixed with the oil, it has a either a cracked head, or a blown head gasket. The brakes are difficult to check since the brake shoes are on the inside of the brake drum. But feel the brake peddle for firmness. If it feels spongy, or the peddle does not hold to constant pressure, it might need brakes shoes and new brake wheel cylinders. Check the shocks by bouncing each corner of the car. If it bounces down and back up and holds, then the shocks are fine. But if it goes down and back up and then back down again, then the shocks are bad and need replacing. Unless a car this old has been fully restored, you're going to be very busy making repairs. And it's very costly. I have already spent $25,000 restoring my '51 Chevy and I'm still not done. Good luck to you.

I notice the fairly rare back-up lights, and the factory (built-in) heater, as well as the clock that you showed us. I'd forgotten about wind-up clocks. I think they're better in vintage cars as they don't have the tendency to break like the electric clocks always do. I'm not sure if the wheel pinstriping is factory but it looks great as does the beautiful trim rings that you have installed. God bless.

Well simple in some ways. But it's got babbitt rod bearings. Not rod bearing inserts. That can make if a little difficult in some ways. Not many mechanics today that know much about babbitt rod bearings. And if something goes wrong, (rod bearings come loose), you have to know someone who knows how to re-pour the bearings and then machine them.

We had a 51 Chevy that we parked on the street. It kept getting stolen. All the thieves had to do was put the shiny side of a chewing gum wrapper, backed by used gum in the back side of the key switch, and hit the starter button. It was running. To stop this Dad replaced the coil wire with about a 4 foot long piece of wire, put a switch in the middle, strung the wire and switch into the glove box. When we turned off the switch, we turned off the coil wire. No more problems.

to shift from 2 to 1st gear, it's a technique you learn to master when you have tro drive this type of crashbox in trafic, it,s a combination of engoine reeving and the feeling of the contact of the mating sliging gear in the crashbox, with practice and a certain skill level, it is relatively easy to accomplish a rapid shift without crunching the gears. Some motorcycles in the past had a similar problem during their development phase, this was back in the carburetor days. The vibration from the engine was causing the gas to froth up in the float bowl. They corrected the problem by using some kind of vibration absorbing material as the carb mounts.

Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!!! (BABBVEN LAWS AND TEBBVEN ORDERS)!!!!!!!

"Completely original" and "completely rebuilt" are mutually exclusive terms.
@dennismay19532 жыл бұрын
"Completely Original", meaning "Rebuilt" to "Original Factory Stock" condition. Why are you splitting hairs?
@BlisterBang2 жыл бұрын
@@dennismay1953 I'm not splitting hairs at all. Completely original meanings nothng was changed, completely rebuilt means the original parts were replaced. There is no way that these two terms are equal. You didn't soup it up when you overhauled it doesn't mean original. If you replace tires with the same type, are they the original tires? If you repaint it with the same color is it the original pain? Then if you rebuild an engine it's not original; original means it's what was in it when it left the factory.
@dennismay19532 жыл бұрын
@@BlisterBang It means I rebuilt it to original factory stock specifications as far as parts are concerned. When I rebuilt the engine, I even used the factory stock babbit rods and bearings instead of using inserts for the crank. The only thing that was not original stock at the time this video was made is the color. That seafoam green was not an original Chevrolet stock color. But even that is in the process of being corrected as it is in the process of being repainted a phantom green and aspen green, which is a Chevrolet factory stock color. Now stop splitting hairs with me. I know the difference between original and refurbished. Original would means that it's never been touched or refurbished. It is refurbished. It's being restored to original factory stock specifications.
@BlisterBang2 жыл бұрын
@@dennismay1953 I'm not splitting hairs, Dennis. Look at your first sentence "original factory stock specifications" The word 'original' has no business there; it's "factory stock specifications". If you had used "stock" originally (yes, pun intended, heh heh), I would not have said anything except how awesome your car looks and all the effort you obviously put into it to make it so close to stock. Think about how you would act if you bought a car and the seller said it was all original, then as you get ready to leave they mention that they completely rebuilt it. You'd, correctly, feel they deceived you, right? Finally, congratulations on having such a great Chevy. I'm jealous - wish I could afford one.
