These are a few clips taken by my late grandfather in 1951-52 with his 8mm film camera. A few ships pass by.

This was the best era of Great Lakes shipping, hands down.

Excellent film footage! Rare to see good color film from the canal in that era.

My dad was sailing the Lakes in those days...during the '40 s & ' 50 s. Lived in Duluth...loved the area.

Yes these videos are incredible. These ships are even pre-AAA class, which are some of the last traditional style lakers on the lakes. I wish I could go back to that time and hear the steam whistles blowing on the old ships.

Good old 8mm, my Dad had quite a few reels of film with holes burnt in them. We sure have advanced since those days. No matter where you were in the US everyone's dress code was the same.

Amazing. Even in 1951 people came to the Canal to watch the ships arrive. Thanks for sharing.

What the hell else was and is there to do in that dump on the lake ? I’m surprised it isn’t the suicide capital of Sodasoda ?

So cool to see this from a perspective 70 years ago, before Duluth was the tourist trap it is today

Oh boy you have seen absolutely nothing if you call Duluth a tourist trap

Great video some of those old girls have small pilot houses

How many of you know that the length of this video likely isn't just by chance. A roll of 8mm film runs about 3 minutes.

Cliffs Victory is a very unique looking ship

It’s kinda odd seeing that Saltie at the beginning with it’s prop out of the water knowing how large and heavy ships are
@BPB99739522 жыл бұрын
I'd be interested to find out if you have a list of the ships that were on this film
@falcondragonslayer2 жыл бұрын
Cliffs Victory was one of them. It’s long since scrapped though.
