You mentioned the great republic's seagull posse compared to other ships. The gulls dog the ships as the props chum up some easy pickings for them. The great republic is the only ship on the lakes that has a drive system that uses Kort Nozzles, which sucks in more water over the props and rudders, this producing more yummychum for the birds as compared to other ships. The Kort Nozzles are fitting to aid with navigation down some of the really narrow rivers so they can maintain more responsive steerage at slower speeds....rivers like the Cuyahoga and Manistee. 👍

I love the weather of the area. I live in Arizona now because of my wife’s health..but I miss the north country. It’s too hot here. When I see the waves, …in my mind I can feel the chill….and I love it. I like the storms, the gray skies, the chop on the water,….and even the blizzards. My wife won’t recover, and when she passes, I’m coming back north. The north country is a special place.

Hi Mike. I've been gonna ask you this, and I keep forgetting. you've probably answered it before. How deep is the water? in the Duluth channel. and how deep is it in the Superior channel? Do they have to be dredged? Or do they stay cleaned out from the current going through them? And do the ship's Captains have any preference on which one they use? I hope to make it up there this summer. Just have to see how things workout. It'll be a nice motorcycle trip from southern Minnesota.

Hi - just found your channel and I'm hooked. Never liked / subscribed so fast. Can you explain what the 101.9 vs 101.6 numbers represent - Does it have to do with the lift bridge clearance? Also , what do the 3 horn blasts mean - is the first set the ship and second set from bridge operator?
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
What’s up Dukx! Happy Friday. Your comment has me hyped up! Thank you so much my friend. First, I’ll start with the numbers. That’s the decibel level of the horns/whistles. I like seeing how loud they are. I have a decibel meter that I walk around with. There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

That pilot house is six decks above the main deck. From there the captain can see the entire deck from the wheel house and can also look down at the propellers and the rudder action at the stern. With a totally unobstracted view. I read once that this ship when built was “the most nimble and manoeuvereable ship in the world”. And here is an interesting tidbit: On June 9, 1996, the American Republic had the honor of carrying the Olympic flame on her deck from Detroit to Cleveland. The flame was transferred to a deck-mounted cauldron torch mounted on the No. 4 Hatch cover at 10:15 AM, and the ship departed Detroit soon after, sailing to dock at Cleveland’s Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, arriving around 8 PM.

Hello -- please forgive me for this question -- I enjoy your videos but have ZERO knowledge about any of these huge ships, the canal at Duluth, etc. So, here goes: what is the purpose of that bridge that goes up and down? On my screen it's sort of silver, and it spans the canal area, and the middle part lifts to allow the ships to pass under it. I cannot see any road on it, nor any railroad tracks. It seems to have no purpose except to hail the incoming or outgoing vessels. It must have another purpose -- please explain. Thanks.

I watched the boat known at the time as American Republic come into Manistee several times. In 2011 the name was changed to Great Republic, and I've seen it a couple of times since. I now live in Colorado, and we don't see many boats or ships here. But I do have Marine Traffic on my iPad and keep track of who's attempting to navigate the river between Lake Michigan and Manistee Lake, where the boats go to unload. The river has a couple of doglegs in it, one of them between two bridges and that limits the size of the freighters that can call on Manistee. Great Republic, having been designed for the Cuyahoga River, does quite well. The Manitowoc is a frequent flyer and the crew handles the river with no problem. Sam Laud and a couple others show up less frequently, and they also use experience to make the trip up and down the river. But Great Republic, with bow and stern thrusters, multiple rudders, and Kort nozzles makes it look easy.

Tom, I can 100% tell you know maritime and vessels. You are exactly the type of person that I want to learn from over time. The long comment you wrote I have read three times because I’m fascinated about how you break down these vessels. When I go down and see these vessels next to the Lift Bridge, I get the same excited feeling like a kid going to Disneyland. Even though I never had a career on the water, I respect every single man and woman that has. I’m learning day by day and having fun. Thank you so much for watching Tom. Please stick around brother.

it seems like the lift bridge lifts 10-15 min before a ship approaches, sure ties up auto traffic
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
Tom, happy Sunday my friend. You made a very good observation. The Aerial Lift Bridge goes up early to ensure there are no mechanical issues, the worry is what if a ship is close to the bridge and it stops going up because of an issue? These huge ships take a long time to stop. The ship could crash into it. It’s an incident prevention measure essentially. 👍⛴️

I'm working from memory here, but here goes. The Great Republic was built for American Steamship and named American Republic. She was built to shuttle pellets from a lakefront dock in either Lorain or Cleveland to the Republic Steel mills on the Cuyahoga River. That is why she has two propellers and multiple rudders, since navigating the Cuyahoga can be difficult and time consuming. I've never been aboard her, but I suspect she has wheels, throttles and gyro repeaters both fore and aft of her large and unusually configured pilot house. Due to economic and political reasons, this didn't pan out. If anyone has other information, feel free to correct me.

As a kid growing up in Manistee, I was fascinated by the boats. At that time, there was much more industry than there is now and more boat traffic. I should make it clear I'm going on 80 years old, so that was many moons ago. We would spend every day in the summer on the beaches next to the piers and got to see lots of boats up close. If you have Google Earth, take a look at Manistee and you'll get an appreciation for the skills of the crews of the boats transiting the river. Check out a website called Boatnerd for all kinds of information on Great Lakes shipping. Also, consider adding Marine Traffic to the sites you visit. There you can track boats, see which boats are in which ports, not only in the Lakes but anywhere in the world. I'm still a kid when it comes to the boats.

Interesting that you ask that, sometimes it does smell a little fishy. Did you see this video of the cruiseship?
Yikes! It’s cold there! Low here last night was 62 degrees….and y’all have surfers? Beautiful ship…the waves hitting the bow made me a little sea sick, even from my computer screen. Maybe, it was the 4K? It’s amazing how much water the ship displaced traveling through the canal, even empty. “Seapigeons” out in droves…beware! Always enjoy your videos! Feels like I’m there, without freezing!
