Boat Friends,
Join me on a thrilling maritime adventure as the mighty Edwin H. Gott departs from Duluth, Minnesota, despite challenging weather conditions. Filmed on April 27, 2024, witness the raw power of Lake Superior in this gripping video.
The Edwin H. Gott, renowned for its robust structure and impressive length of over 1000 feet, braves the elements as it heads out of Duluth. On this day, it was not just battling the typical waves but was also loaded with a full cargo of iron ore, adding to the drama of its journey. As the rain poured down and the winds howled at 30 mph, the Gott made its way under the iconic Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge and through the ship canal, where the waves were churning, splashing wildly against the walls, soaring feet into the air.
Experience the intensity from a safe distance and see why the Edwin H. Gott is a favorite among ship enthusiasts and Boat Friends around the world. The splashing waves, combined with the stormy weather, create a spectacle that is both beautiful and fierce. This video is perfect for anyone who loves ships, thrilling weather conditions, and the raw beauty of Lake Superior.

While I agree that those pilot house forward 1000 footers are quite distinctive, living in Baltimore we get to see some really enormous ships including ones loaded with THOUSANDS of tractor trailer sized containers STACKED very high on the deck. Alas, those ships are too big to enter the Great Lakes via the Welland Canal. But I think we all agree, beautiful ships are a joy to behold. Sam, 83* Towson, MD

The bridge to ship salutes never gets old!
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 2 ай бұрын
They never get old. You are so right. Here’s some more information about those salutes if people want to know. There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

The ships are really fun, but I absolutely love finding the unique things to look at while we are looking at them, while not noticing them. If that all makes sense? 😂😂 An example, not many people look down and notice the reflection inside of a puddle, but I love seeing the reflection of something cool providing a new perspective. Looking at the bridge in the reflection of a puddle is something that not everybody thinks about doing, but it’s cool when you see it. Another thing is looking at the shadow from the bridge on a ship. How many people think about that shadow? However, I think it’s cool to see the bridge outline from the shadow on a ship passing under. You also see other things I like capturing birds, sand, etc. I just have a lot of fun trying to make it interesting and covering some of the art things I like as well in a ship video. I hope you are doing well. I know it’s late there in Italy, I appreciate you taking time out of your evening to drop a comment and mentioned the artistic part of the videos. Super appreciate that and thank you so much, my friend. I hope you make it here to Duluth somday. We watch a ship together.🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️

My Dad worked on frieghters on the Great Lakes from 1937 until the attack on Pearl Harbor. Then, of course, he joined the Navy. He was born in 1920. He once told me if he slept at the right time he wouldn't see land for four days on the lakes. I grew up in Michigan but now reside on the Gulf Coast, I'm still around big water. One thing that I've noticed about people from other parts of the Country is they have NO IDEA just how massive the Great Lakes are. My Wife's first reaction was priceless. She kept calling Lake Michigan an ocean. I could see the "HOLY CRAP" look on her face. I beam with pride when someone visits Michigan for the first time and comes back to tell me about their trip.

@@vibewithmike My family has been going there since Canal Park was a mostly-unused gravel lot. My great-grandparents were from Minneapolis and used to spend weekends on the shore whenever they could. My grandparents got to where they could look at a ship far out in the lake and tell if it was headed to Silver Bay, Two Harbors, or Duluth. Then they'd "race it in," no matter what time of the day or night. My first visit was as a young child in 1992, and I've probably been back 15-20 times since then (now bringing my own kids with -- the fifth generation in my family to call it "our place.") I kind of miss the shore the way it used to be, with the fishing shanties and all the Mom 'n' Pop cabin rentals. But it's great to see more people getting there to enjoy it too. It's more fun to watch my kids enjoy the big ships coming in than to watch them myself!

I totally respect you! All of you that work in the Maritime industry, you were all known as hard workers. It must’ve been so cool walking on those ships. That’s what all of us dream of. And here you were actually fixing/maintaining the ship. When you stand on deck on a ship like that is it even more impressive being on it looking out or is it more impressive looking at it from a distance? Liz, it’s actually really fun watching them go through the ship canal with the waves and some weather. Now I don’t want the weather to be too severe for the ships so they’re in danger but a big ship like this made easy work of these waves and wild weather in this video. Just watched the Edwin H Gott go out. Wow the waves on the bow were huge. We went thru the Tornado outbreak in Iowa on Friday . They estimate over 100 tornados sighted. The most common bow of our old lakers is the axe bow, made for cutting through waves and higher speeds. The bulbous bow is used where the ship maintains a cruisibg speed for long distances and decreases fuel consumption. TheGott hasneuther an axe or bulbous bow seems to have the plumb bow. Maritime terms are so interesting as well as their explanations. Just another bit of trivia..Park Point beach was voted one of the top 3 beaches in the USA, very impressive since its size is not. Duluth has much to offer the resident or tourist. The weather especially ever changing and strikingly beautiful no matter stormy or clear.

This powerful ship is such a beast and had no problem going through those waves. I really appreciate you taking time out of your Sunday to watch this ship. I really like getting out there, especially when the weather is bad to show how cool these ships are.

Always some crazy wave action when a fully loaded boat enters the confines of the canal. And you gotta watch that stern wave. Lotta people get drenched because they're looking the wrong way and they back-doored by the stern wave.

Brett, I can tell you this brother, I was that guy that had to learn the hard way. I stood too close to the wall a few times and got completely drenched. Now I stand feet back, sometimes I get so mesmerized that I forget about the splashing and it gets close.

Humans made it, and humans sail it despite nature. Really quite amazing. One human, the captain, is responsible for sailing it. Imagine the road to becoming that captain-lots of experience, leadership, and good judgment.

It’s no easy task becoming a captain,. You really have to know what you’re doing and you have everybody’s life in your hands. I want you to take a look at this video at least a few minutes ago. Take a look at this perspective out on the water. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJPNd4VqmLabe9Usi=uHcN2MV0jWx5UbU-
