Not only are all Hydramatics 4-spd until 1961, but until 1956 Reverse range had a Parking cog when engine was off.

Nice car. The Hydra Matic transmission is a 4 speed automatic transmission. With shifter in Lo, the car starts in first speed and changes into second at about 10miles per hour.

Emphatic statements have been made in these comments about Hydramatic being a 4-spd transmission, which is certainly true. HOWEVER, just for the record, I remember reading years ago that--at least in 1951--there were some Hydramatics that, when placed in DR, actually started in 2nd gear, with 1st gear only accessible when starting in Low. (This would make it feel like a 3-spd transmission, if you didn't know otherwise.) An acquaintance of mine and I both owned '51 98s in the early 1980s. My car would go through all 4 gears when starting in Dr, whereas my acquaintance's would go through only 3 gears, but still ending in high gear. So, what I remember reading decades ago about certain "outlier" Hydramatic trannies seems to have been true, although this may have been unique to 1951. (Starting in 2nd would be preferable in icy conditions, whereas the ultra-low Hydramatic 1st gear is guaranteed to make your wheels spin on ice!)

You are correct about some 51 Hydras starting off in 2nd when in Drive. Pontiac called it "Dual Range Hydramatic". For 52 though, GM reworked the Hydramatic to provide two Drives, 1 - 4th gear, and 1 - 3rd gear. General Motors called this "Dual Range Hydramatic" as well, and it is not the same as the 51 3 forward speed trans.

These days one is better off to buy one that's already been restored or an older restoration as restoration now has gotten too expensive. Not to mention we might not have gasoline to drive them after 2035. Love hearing it run. Shows you don't need to mess it up with a 12 volt electrical changover when 6 volts does just fine. It would have been nice of you didn't put music in when you guys were taking your drive. I'd rather hear car sounds and I think most viewers agree on that.

Pretty sure there will be petrol in 2035. And prehaps even eFuels ( synthetic fuels). There is too much money and time invested in classic cars not to have some type of fuel for these classics.

4 speed automatic, not 3 speed. If you only have 3 speeds, something is wrong with it.

WHY WOULD A FULLY RESTORED 1952 OLDS 98 REINSTALL THE CHEAP SEAT COVERS THAT THE DEALER INSTALLED PROBABLY ON ORDERS FROM THE BUYER AS IT WAS THE CASE BACK THEN TO KEEP THE SEATS FROM WEARING . HOWEVER UNDER THAT CHEAP SEAT COVERS IS A BEAUTIFUL WOOL AND MOHAIR FABRIC SEATS BOLSTER IN BLOCK SECTION AND COLOR COORDINATED .THIS CAR HAS THE SAME SEATS AS THE CADILLAC OF ITS TIME THE SAME AS THE SERIES 62 CADILLAC'S.BUT THE CAR IS NOT A LOADED 98 OF ITS TIME .IT HAS CRANK WINDOWS MANUAL SEAT AND THE LESSER OF THE 2 RADIOS .''WONDERBAR''' WAS THE TOP OF THE LINE AS IT AUTOMATICALLY SELECTED THE NEXT POWERFUL STATION.ALSO AUTRONIC EYE WAS AVAILABLE AND IS NOT ON THIS CAR WHICH DIMMED THE LIGHTS AUTOMATICALLY AND BACK TO BRIGHTS. AND THAT HYDRAMATIC IS A 4 SPEED TRANSMISSION !! LOW IS 1ST AND 2ND SUPER IS 3 RD AND DR IS 4TH. THAT WAS OLDS CLAIM TO FAME AS WHEN YOU WERE ON THE ROAD AND WANTED PASS A SLOWER CAR JUST DEPRESS THE ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULD AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT TO 3 RD GEAR AND GIVE BURST OF POWER,LIFT AND IT WOULD GO BACK INTO 4TH.AND ALL OLDS HAD THAT SAFTEY BLINKING LIGHT TO WARN AGAINST BURNING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE.BUT WAS ATTACHED TO THE INTERIOR LIGHTING SYSTEM.AND IF THIS CAR CAME WITH 7.60.15 TIRES THEY WERE UNDERSIZED AS THE SUPER 88 USED THAT SIZE THE 98'S WERE 8;00 8;20 X15. I KNOW ALL THIS AS I HAD A 1953 SUPER 88 AND MY PARENTS HAD 1953 98 TOTALLY LOADED INCLUDING AIR CONDITIONING. AND HAD US ROYAL PUNCTURE PROOF TIRES FROM THE FACTORY SIZE 8:00 8:20 X15 A $500.00 OPTION. MY SUPER 88 HAD ALL THAT BUT NO AIR.
