If the rear window is leaking on your classic car, then it's time to replace that window seal. Replacing the windshield seal or the rear window seal on a classic car or truck is fairly straight forward. Just set aside some time for the project and be patient.
In this video I show how to replace the rear window weatherstripping on a 1954 Chevy Sedan. This same process can be used on most cars with this style weatherstrip. Take your time, remove the old seal, clean the window and the lip on the body, and then get ready to install the new seal. Make sure to use plenty of soapy water to help lube the seal, which will make it go on the window and the body easier. And don't forget to use the rope to help pull the inside portion of the seal over the lip on the body.

When you fit these curved windshields you start your rope at the bottom like you did but also at the top center by putting a loop in the rope .pull in about 18 inches bottom then same on top check that your glass is still central if not move it, then pull the corners in with someone putting pressure from outside always make sure it's centred. I've been fitting autoglass for 30 years in Australia

Getting ready to install a new window seal myself in my 54. Your video will save me a lot of time trying to figure it out! Awesome! Thank you!

You're welcome. Put a few pieces of masking tape across the window edges and body and draw lines across them prior to removing the window. This will help you align it when you go to re-install. I think that's why mine was a bit off.

I'm curious about how you handled the gap? I've watched many KZbin videos on installing a windshield and nobody mentioned this might happen. Good job, especially doing it alone!

What I should have done was put a mark line (using a piece of tape) on the window and the body prior to removing the window. That would have ensured alignment. I thought about taking the window out and reinstalling, but this is sort of a rat rod, so I didn't feel like doing that. I ended up doing the one thing that is actually a pet peeve of mine. I used black caulking to fill in the gap. I smoothed it out so it looks like a rib in the weatherstripping, so you don't even notice it.

@@RaybuckAutoBodyParts I am glad I watched this. One thing I will do is mark the center of the windshield on both the car and the body so that I can line them up. Thanks for responding.

question... trying to change the passenger side beltline molding stainless on a 53 Packard Clipper rear window. Concerned about window does it have to be removed?.

I'm not sure. I've seen some vehicles where you can replace the beltline without removing the window and some where you can't. If the window rolls down into the quarter panel far enough, I would think you could replace the beltline without removing the window.

What type of product would you use for a 70 nova front and rear glass?

I would find the correct replacement weatherstripping for each window. We do not carry it, but you can try Steele Rubber Products.

On the firewall of your car should be a tag that has the color code on it you may able to research that my 53 has the tag there on the firewall with the color code. It will be on the passenger side top of the firewall.

Yep, just found it on the top of the firewall, passenger side. Thanks! My paint code is 544, which corresponds with Biscayne Blue Poly. Interestingly, paint code 542 is Bermuda Green Poly, which actually looks similar to the color I found under the window weatherstripping. Maybe I'll get a sample of each and try them out.

The factory sealer is called dum dum.... must have or it will leak trust me mess to clean up and the new is a 3m type Black in color like a string you must lap the ends and it goes in the window groove in the seal .these windows are a B... especially the front glass. Replaced my clear glass for the green of the day glass. won't do that again.... but it looks vintage and one of the good things i did for my 53 time machine. Mine has the SS trim to put back in the grove on the out side, Go slow and make it a LABOR OF LOVE, OR IT WILL BE A WAR...TRUST ME

Thanks for the info. That makes sense. I thought about using the 3M Weatherstrip adhesive, but when we did the windows on our 53 Chevy pickup it was recommended that we not use any type of adhesive (we didn't and it doesn't leak), so I didn't use any on the car. Luckily it doesn't leak.
