Great clear voice! That blurb about the HydraMatic was interesting. Never heard that one before. But, that version of the HydraMatic is for HD truck use, such as a semi rig or something like a 2-ton truck. It also talks about a 3-speed auxiliary transmission. This is commonly called a "Brownie". Strange that it states that it is synchromesh. They usually weren't. The experimental Futurliner coaches that GM built actually had 2 4-speed Hydramatics with individual shifters in the driver's compartment. I guess that they were connected in line to each other and used for automatic gear reduction instead of adding a "Brownie". I believe that the Futurliners were powered by a 6 cyl and it needed any help it could get to push the coach along.
@What.its.like.5 ай бұрын
Thank you Thanks for sharing all the insite I was looking for something that broke down the different gears because many think the original hydra matic was a 3 speed because the turbo hydra matic is a 3 speed people only remember what came last..
@automatedelectronics60625 ай бұрын
@@What.its.like. The original HydraMatics were might have seemed like they were 3-speeds because the shift from 1 to 2 was early, quick and imperceptible. The purpose of the 1st gear was to give the car a quick boost off the line. This feature was replaced by the torque converter, which basically does the same thing so there was only a need for 3 gears and the reason why 2-speed automatics could work. An exception was the Buick Super Turbine automatics with variable(2-position) torque converters where the extra boost could be used when there was a demand for extra boost while traveling down the road.
@n.mcneil40665 ай бұрын
Unlike a standard clutch which breaks torque completely when disengaged a fluid coupling, as in this case, or a torque converter has a lot of drag in it & even at an idle there is some torque applied to the input shaft. A non synchro auxiliary behind an automatic would be very difficult to get into gear & to shift.
@automatedelectronics60625 ай бұрын
@@n.mcneil4066 The isn't that much drag in a fluid coupling at idle. When the idle is adjusted correctly, a fluid coupling transmission will usually idle in gear with the brake of and the car will not move. But, yes, there will be some rotational pressure on the input shaft as also with a torque converter. At cruise, a fluid coupling is said to a closer match of torus speeds than a torque converter. The torque converter is similar to a fluid coupling, with drive torus and a driven torus, but a stator is added to multiply the torque. At idle, in gear, with the brake on, the stator will be more or less stationary or will turn slightly with the drive torus, if idle speed is correct and low enough. Initially, when the drive torus gains speed the stator recirculates the fluid for a second or so and then turns at the same speed as the driven torus. Torque is no longer being multiplied. The Buick Super Turbine transmission had moveable stator blades, actuated by a solenoid. They were actuated at idle to provide a little more torque for start-up and actuated under full throttle to give a boost when passing. An auxiliary transmission is good to be synchronized but cannot be shifted like an automatic. Just as with older overdrive units, there has to be a break in power for the gear ratio to change. This is as simple as lifting your foot off the fuel pedal. Downshifting is another story. When downshifting the auxiliary transmission, there has to be a power break . Non-synchronized auxiliary transmissions, it is more critical that the output speed of the main transmission matches the speed of what the input shaft of the auxiliary transmission will be at downshift. Newer overdrive units are operated by clutches like in automatic transmissions, so can be engaged or disengaged at will.
@n.mcneil40665 ай бұрын
@@automatedelectronics6062 I always get myself into trouble but thank you for the explanation. I believe the big push for automatics in trucks was to eliminate applying that manual clutch. double clutching. & rev matching on downshifts as well as reducing driver training time. I think rev matching through an automatic may be hard because when you raise the gas pedal the trans may upshift & when you depress it you may get a downshift. This could throw out your revs.

I would choose the Mercury Custom and then the Pontiac Chieftain. I also think the dashboards in the Pontiacs really look nice, some of the best. The Pontiac needs fender skirts, I think, which may be in the trunk. Would have gone for the Nash but I don't think they have much power. Personally, I think the end of each video with the extra footage is just great. I don't really need to have music. It is nice and tranquil. What a great original-condition car 😎 And even at a distance from any angle you can immediately tell it's a Pontiac from the styling. I prefer the later generations but from this era onward are the most beautiful Pontiacs ever made and perhaps the epitome of styling for their time. Not quite at the era where Pontiac dominated stock-car racing but that would soon come. And who doesn't like the beautiful hood ornaments Pontiac used through these years. Personally I hated when they dropped them as they were one of the first 'things automotive' I came to love and be fascinated with as a very young child.BTW,I had an uncle who only drove Pontiacs, keeping them shiny, spotless, and in perfect mechanical condition all the time. WYR Since I like being different it's the Hudson which is a nice car on it's own merits, and the Pontiac Cheiftan for round 2. On the channel and Jay, I like the new intro listing major and specialized car shows. And screw the nay-sayers about Jay's voice and style; he's for real and does a great job with everything. Today's younger crowd doesn't understand that being yourself and having your own perspective is more important and more valuable than being someone you ain't and trying to please everyone without offending anyone. We're all supposed to be different, DUH! So roll on Jay, and don't let the mental midgets (which includes KZbins moderators) disparaging and worthless comments and practices drag you down.

Trolls are unhappy people who want other people to feel as miserable and emotionally challenged as they do. Trolls are too cowardly to say things to your face, so they spread their misery anonymously. Many KZbin content creators remove trolls' comments and block them from posting new comments. This prevents trolls from receiving the attention they crave so desperately. You may have to do this a number of times, but most trolls eventually get bored and leave.

I've been waiting for this episode. My dad had a 1954 Chieftan with a straight 8. He drove it back and forth to work in the early 1960s. I was really young, so the memory is vague. but I think I remember it was a 4-door. I remember the hood ornament, for sure. The hood ornament was pretty cool, though no longer PC. I also seem to remember it was a two-tone paint job, white bottom and light blue top but I can't remember for sure. Is there a source on the web to research dealer colors offered? Thanks for this episode.

First, your voice is just fine. Eff the idiots. Second, my aunt had a 53 or 54 black Pontiac. I don't remember anything about it other than that gigantic speaker grille (which I remember as having a different design, so it might have been a 54). Hey, I was only 4 or 5 when she had it. Third: the transmission description at 6:46 does not seem to be for a Pontiac, but probably a GMC truck. I don't think cars got a 7 speed with a 3 speed reduction box with PTO! The view of the shift quadrant at 14:30 shows a normal Hydramatic pattern, not the "hold" position described in the text. BTW, like this car, I am a '53 model, but that car (which looks like a survivor car) is probably in better shape than I am! WYR= Hudson and Mercury. Glad your not-hated-by-most- of-us voice is much better now.

The '53 Pontiac was slated to have the new V-8, but due to production delays, it didn't happen until 1955.
@davidpowell3347Ай бұрын
I think the V8 may have been vetoed by GM Corporate because they didn't want Pontiac to take sales away from Oldsmobile and/or Buick. The weight and performance citations for the car sound low. Empty weight for the 1950 4 door Eight three on the tree was 3712 if I remember and,well broken in,its speedometer was pegged at 100 by a couple drivers (probably 5 or so mph. optimistic) and sounded like the engine was in serious overspeed territory. Pontiac horsepower likely understated in order to stay well under Oldsmobile rating which was understated to stay under Buick and/or Cadillac ?
@robertwbingoАй бұрын
@@davidpowell3347 That's certainly a strong "perhaps". Pontiac was the only division in the "Big Three" that was still pushing a straight eight, and dealers were screaming for a V-8. As "last hurrah", the dealers were given the Star Chief as something to hold them over for one more year, and it was available with a mind-blowing list of options, including A/C in the dash, the way we have it today.

I'm torn between the Hudson and the Pontiac. The Hudson has a cool, but dated, look. The engine would have been the smaller Hudson 6 and not the famous Hornet 308 with Twin H carburetion and a real slug. The Pontiac had a more modern look for the times and whatever 8 cyl. was in it would make the car quicker than the Hudson.
