I remember the driving advantage of the overdrive was the clutch was not needed to go from 2nd gear to 3rd. I didn’t know much about autos back in 1958 when my first car was a Texas made custom liner with a v8 and racing rib tires that I pushed hard going thru flat Kansas. Good memories!

i have a 1954 for customline and right now its a gross yellow and brown but i was going to paint it red with a white roof but now Im painting it this color OMG its sooo Beautiful I love it and the off white looks alot more 50's then a bright red :)

The overdrive is not activated by that T handle, that handle locks it into direct drive. The Borg- Warner overdrive, in this model is the R-10, and is a planetary set behind the basic normal 3 speed trans. A governor and an electric solenoid, in conjunction with the kickdown switch and overdrive relay on the firewall, operate the planetaries much like the gears in a modern auto trans.
