Thanks so much everybody for the engine suggestions. I'm leaning toward getting a good used 302 paired with a t5. Or it's possible we may just keep the Pontiac engine in there and throw a Holley fuel injection kit on it. Going to be up to the guy who owns the truck but will definitely be a part 3 in the far future. Thanks again for tuning in and I know part two was kind of short but I figured I would ask for opinions before slapping a motor in there.

Plenty of these out there with the venerable 302……boring! Go a touch more exotic with a Coyote 5.0 with a supercharger you got the room under that huge hood. Put Coyote stickers on it…….maybe an ACME logo on the doors as well.

in 1984 I was a student at College of the Redwoods 1n Eureka, CA. Iwas taking Automotive classes one of my teachers brought in his '54 Ford pickup which had been sitting in his shed for years. I asked if I could be the person to get the project it running He started restoring it but put by the wayside. He had striped down to just the cab and bed. He had a rebuilt 289 sitting in it that was never run yet. No oil in it. I had to take the intake off to check for critter nest. Since no oil was in it I pulled the pan off to get it cleaned up. Informed him what I need to get it started. He got the stuff. Finished putting in the oil and filter on hooked up power and gas line. Hit the starter and it fired off running and was smooth. When it started acorns were fly out the exhaust pipe. I went and got him out of his machine shop class. showed what I done. Put the power to the engine cranked it over and it roared to life. He said he has waited years to hear and see it run

I’m aPontiac guy so I’d have a hard time changing it. I think the motor depends on his needs. But if it wants to stay Ford, it’s hard to pass up a 302 five speed combo. If he’s got a ton of $$ to spend go with a crate cyote 5.0 Hope you can find an off-road park to the 5 ton. They look mean with the single axle conversion.

Love it! And thanks for deciding on a FOMOCO powerplant for it, she deserves it!!!!! Haven't been wrenching much for a couple of decades but something from a late '90s would be EFI and those 351 Windsors are really good motors. I've ran everything from flatheads to built 460's and windsors are my favorite all around go to. I realize as I'm watching this 7 months after release you've made the choice but I had to include my 2 cents.

I'm on your side. Funding permitting, I would hook up a 4R100 and a Holly Eliminator on a 429 c.i.d. 4V controlling it all. If the funding is tight, then as you suggest a Coyote power plant with all the fuel injection fixins' in there. 3rd option, 351 Windsor with the factory Shelby manifold for bbls. and maybe a F.I. tech system and then the T5 or Tremco TKO. Cheers.

I got no problem with the Poncho mill but I understand wanting to keep it all Ford. How about a 7.3 diesel Or a late model 6.7? That would be a cool project if you like doing wiring. I’ve had several 289/302ci motors and I liked them also, lots of aftermarket support for the EFI and other goodies. Plenty of 3valve 4.6-5.4L motors in the wrecking yard for cheap and a Coyote would be the obvious choice if the budget allows. Quick check on the Pontiac motor. Grab a date code from anywhere (there are several, look like a screw head, four digits and another screw head in an oval) and the two letter code from the front of the block just under the passenger side head. High value will be RamAir or Super Duty engines. On the back of the block casting near the distributor there is a pyramid shaped post on some of them. Commonly called the “power tower” if it has one of those, you can finance your engine swap with sale of that engine. I have most of the two letter engine codes in old issues of Pontiac magazine, if you want to post them here I can probably identify them for ya.

I'm an old geezer 70 years old are used to have a Pontiac Parisien probably not spelt right it was made in Canada in 1964 , when I was living in England I got it quite cheap done some work on it and like you I floored it , Engine mount was a bit dodgy ended up smacking the distributor on the bulkhead firewall obviously the motor stopped I was in my late teens early 20s when I done that . Keep up the great work look forward to part three , Phil from the Moulin in France

If money is no option than I would swap out the motor and trans for the 5.2L Alluminator XS crate motor via Ford performance parts catalog with Bowler T56 Magnum six-speed transmission. My Dad bought his sweet sixteen childhood truck that he's been dreaming of since his last one burnt down a long with our family's Ford dealership back in 1972. That truck was a 53' but this 56' he bought two years ago at Barrett Jackson. It's truly immaculate, but like most of the resto mods you find, it has an automatic transmission. The motor is a big 460ci with aluminum heads and for me that's just way too much motor for this truck. Personally I wish it had a small block and four speed transmission!

I think a modern 5.0 T-5 is a great idea. You can make it as powerful as you want, including a supercharger or turbo. Even N/A with just a small stroke and some better heads would give you nice power and more reliability.

I agree. The 302 is nice and torquey compared to more modern ford engines. A lot more fun to drive in that type of vehicle. Even a 351 would be cool. Either way would be my choice. The t5 is an absolute piece of garbage though. It would need to be beefed up if you go that route.

I'm a ford guy that hates out of brand swaps. But i do love pontiac and pontiac engines. This one I'd would have been ok with. But even a late model fox or SN-95 seems underpowered compared to that pontiac without serious upgrades. The 400s could come with almost 400hp and well over 400 ft/lbs depending on the year. He may not care since he didn't drive it anyway. At least not recently.

@@NoNonsenseKnowHow You sound a bit like me... only I'm about twice your age. But I do love tinkering and fixing old shit. Its very satisfying to see these old beasts get another lease on life. My area of tink was mostly old English cars like Hillmans, Land Rovers, Morris, Austin, and the like. Very basic stuff. Almost like you're back in WW2. I got into it in my 20's, (back in the '80s) buying workshop manuals for the cars I owned, 'cause I got sick of paying mechanic bills, which just kept going up and up. 'Ta hell with that!' I thought. Yeah, really dig your vids.

Keep the Poncho and put a manual in it. Be a bit different then the regular small block Ford or Chevy install. Plus you already have the 400 now. And Pontiacs have a ton of low end torque making them good street engines.

What a great solid rig, I have to say I'd keep it vintage engine wise, i wonder what he went with eventually. I can't begin to imagine what this would cost to buy if something similar came up now, well out of my league sadly.
