Thank you very much for showing us this car that represents a great brand that set trends in design and innovation, as well as innovation in car customization and that today is forgotten in the face of the commercial achievements of the big three. In a magazine that my girlfriend of my youth gave me, in the 80s a report from the Kaiser Safari appeared. I wish you could generate a report on that model from the 50s. I would also like to see one about the 1969 AMC Rebel Hardtop SST, for a sentimental reason about this specific model. Thanks again for your great contribution to the spread of automotive culture.

In 1958 my father and uncle bought a Cities Service station in Duluth Minnesota. Part of the deal was that it came with a 1952 Kaiser Manhattan. I was 8 at the time and still remember riding all over in that thing. Even then it was considered to be out of the ordinary to have a Kaiser and already being a car nut I loved it.

A friend of mine is big into Kaisers and Frazers ad has owned a bunch of them, but never a bamboo edition. This is a new one on me, too. 1954 was Kaiser's last year. 53s were almost identical except for the tail light trim which was solid chrome as opposed to this one with the red plastic insert.
@michaelbenardo56952 жыл бұрын
55 was the last year. The 54 and 55 had new front end styling and, most of them, a wrap-around rear window that the 53 didn't have. 54 and 55 offered an optional supercharged engine that was not available in 53.

Is the hood ok? It looks to be sitting up a little at the scuttle end when we starts to drive there. Never heard of this model before either, so thanks Dennis!
@1940limited4 жыл бұрын
The hoods didn't open very wide on these, making them a pain to work on.
@creepingjesus51064 жыл бұрын
@@1940limited I can imagine! Anything down the side of the block must be a pain to get to, if you can't get it from underneath. Hinges looked stiff too, so I was wondering if they'd moved a little while he shut it after shooting.

Hood shouldn't have been opened in the first place.

Dash pad (which looks to be stock) and vinyl roof were made to look like bamboo, the rest is a very interesting owner mod...took some major digging just to discover that much. Rare is an understatement. Modifications just make it more Kaisery...

He talked about the rear window. You look through it it's like you have Walleye vision or you got prescription glasses. It's kind of like the side mirrors on vehicles. Objects are closer then they appear in mirror. LOL.

Replaced bamboo with oak? Please replace the bamboo. “Prescription rear window” Dennis lol. 🤣 Great car love it.

Was this one originally sold in a foreign country? As far as I know, 54s without supercharger were badged as Specials, not DeLuxe.
@scootergeorge7089 Жыл бұрын
The 1954 Special was originally built to unload, left over, unsold 1953 Manhattans.
@robfrye46644 жыл бұрын
That car is definitely not 'unrestored'! The interior has been redone, it's been repainted at least twice.
@UberLummox4 жыл бұрын
Well it's obviously never been fully restored. "Fixing up", and a couple bad paint jobs doesn't mean restored, but yeah, it's not 100% original!
@guynewport4 жыл бұрын
Mr. Gauge? I hope you urge folks, off-camera of course, not to use those plastic, in-line filters close to an engine! Melt one and change the schedule on your restoration in a hurry..... Great car to review as well, Thank You!

Why no air cleaner? Driving it that way means rapid ring and cylinder wear.

Sorry to see all the independents that disappeared after WW2, but it was a wildly competitive time, and the Big Three had deep pockets. Makes you wonder what a 2020 Kaiser, Hudson, or Tucker would look like. BTW, my grandfather had a green Kaiser Manhattan that sat behind the barn for quite a long time. A fun place to pretend to drive.
@maxkorfendagus93364 жыл бұрын
BTW, I wouldn't drive that car without an air filter! One good backfire and it's BBQ-Kaiser!
@neildickson53944 жыл бұрын
I've never seen a "deluxe" before. Seen many Dragons. Did the factory build the interior that way? Seems unlikely. That door overhang is reminiscent of the 58 Packard Hawk. The red really sucks. The original yellow would make it pop as originally planned. Definitely the most modern car on the road in 1954 outside of Studebaker. Also, needs wide Coker whites. Extremely unique.

You're not wrong there at all! The front end was inspired by the Buick XP-300 concept car from 1951!
