1955 Pegaso Z-102: The Thriller

In a time well before the word supercar entered our vocabulary, the fastest one in the world was built in an economically compromised Spain by a state-owned manufacturing company whose primary focus was on trucks, buses, and other industrial vehicles. In other words, the Pegaso Z-102 was born of strange circumstance, and since it was a wildly expensive endeavor for a country recovering from civil war, not many were built in period, and they remain obscure today with only a few dozen surviving from the original production run. A dry-sump V8 with four cams powers the alloy coachwork (a number of bodies were available from Italian and Spanish coachbuilders like Touring and Serra), and though it saw no success on the racing circuit, the Z-102 was among the most advanced and high-performing GTs of its day. Join us for a ride around the outskirts of Madrid as we put Rafael Pueche’s 1955 example through its paces-rare cars need exercise too.

Pegasos were the fastest and most advanced cars of the time, more advanced than Ferrari, Porsche or Mercedes-Benz. Cars made in Spain in the difficult postwar years.

My grandfather was a lathe operator in Madrid. Back in the early 50s he received a request to build some pre-production parts for a prototype of disc brakes for these Pegaso Z series. From what my father told me (he was like 11-12 at the time), I think that the parts were Master cylinder's and/or Caliper parts. The Pegaso engineer who ordered the job had had two bad experiences ordering the prototype parts from other shops and apparently my grandfather managed to get them right. The engineer was so pleased that he insisted tipping my grandfather, which he refused in favor of my father who was witnessing the scene. As they waved the engineer goodbye, my grandfather said "come on kid, you're not keeping that tip with you". Shame that my grandfather passed away in 1962 and also that he insisted on my father not following his career/business. Would have loved to hear the story from his own voice with the full details. I feel something special every time that I see a Pegaso Z... Great video as usual, Petrolicious!

jojerrgv: I don't dude that any piece or repair could be done in Madrid, but it was not usual, the Z-102 model was built in the Pegaso factory in Barcelona, which before the war had been the Hispano-Suiza factory. The bodie-work were the only thing they ordered outside, to french or Italian bodybuilders.

What a lovely video presentation of a very fine gentleman and an iconic automobile. I was 14 years old in 1955 and in my boyhood naivete I imagined I would one day own a Pegaso. I saw pictures of one in Mechanic's Illustrated and thought it was the most desirable car I had ever seen, and I didn't even know it was 4-ohc V8. Twenty five years would pass before I would see one in person at a car show in Paris. I was not disappointed. Thank you very much for this wonderful video.

I recall seeing a Pegaso car in Spain when I was 13 years old on a family holiday, 1959. Had no clue what it was and only saw it one time near San Feliu de Guixols, but what I remember was not an open car, but more like a sedan - perhaps the coupe version.

The Z-102 is one of the best car in history. I love the Pegasos. It is curious that in a very poor country like Epaña in the 50s was able to make such a fantastic car and direct rival of Ferrari and Jaguar.

Next to the Hispano-Suiza, there's not a lot of Spanish auto makers. But almost all of the models from both companies are extremely collectible not just because of their rarity but because of their history, performance and most importantly unique European design. I've always thought Pegasos didn't get enough credit in the vintage European car world but hopefully cars like this (and owners like Rafael) will change that and introduce these cars to the younger enthusiasts.

Wikipedia tells us that Iveco took over Enasa in 1994 and, at that point, the Pegaso name ceased to be. The last time I was in Spain was in 1972 (shame on me!) and, at that time, there were a great many Pegaso trucks and buses on the roads. The rear end of the Porsche 928 bore some resemblance to one of the Pegaso coupes, as I remember. Thanks for the usual beautifully produced, interesting and informative video.

Finally!! A video on my all time favorite sports car the Pegaso, wish they could have continued making sports cars, they could have been a huge competitor to Ferrari, cause they were better and more sophisticated in every way. It's also just a shame too that they had some bad luck in racing cause the Pegaso was one of the fastest cars on the track and on the street, maybe if they had done well in motorsports that could have gave them motivation in continuing making cars despite the costs. Great video!

I think I've seen or heard of the Pegasus a long time ago. I appears to be a thoroughbred every bit as high performance as Ferrarri. I think it has beautiful lines and a beautiful engine. I think the driver was holding back. He was being a gentleman in not rodding that thing but driving safely. It takes extreme discipline to hold back on the application of throttle. I wouldn't mind owning one if I could afford it. I think those velocity stacks tell a story and it says I'm hungry to eat up the road. I would be interested to know if that is a 6, 8, 12 cylinder engine. I'm fairly certain Enzo would be nervous. Nice roadster thank you for showing her. I may have seen her years ago at The Nut Tree Concourse de Elegance in Vacaville California. Maybe just wishful thinking! Lovely vehicle, hope your able to enjoy that growl! Love to see more, thanks!

I vividly remember looking a pictures of a Pegaso, it had a strange rear canopy style rear window and the wheels were covered by the bodywork, looked very aviation inspired. Years later I find out that the Pegaso Z-102 series of cars were all unique coach built bodies. Such an interesting car company and the story that surrounds it. Thanks Petrolicious!

Lovely example that is well known here in Spain and great video. It's a beatiful hybrid between Touring coupé body and spanish talentous Serra, which were two of the carroseries involved in bodying the Pegasos in period alongside with french Saoutchick and public ENASA. Some three year ago we did something similar but simpler with a unit that's even rarer, the only example of Z-103/4 evolution with unique engine which is kept in the dark by IVECO in historical Pegaso factory at Barajas, Madrid. Pegaso should have been so much more, but it really weren't the best times for it's survival...
