What a beautiful Studebaker Speedster Lou! Of course as you know Lou I am partial to Studebakers because of my grandfather and Uncle selling them till Studebaker went out of business in 1966. So many memories as a kid of Studebakers I'll always be in love with Studebaker! Thanks Lou for sharing this!

This car is beautiful, and the interior is just great. I have loved Studebakers since I was a kid. When I was 7 years old, I rode along with my mother, her dad and his sister driving a new 1954 Studebaker station wagon up the Alcan Hwy to Alaska after picking it up in Seattle and driving down to San Francisco. My mother was pregnant with my youngest brother and did all the driving. I wanted my parents to keep that car until I was 16 and let me buy it from them. But no, they sold it to buy a 1958 Chevrolet Yeoman station wagon.

When I was young - Studebaker coupes were all my father owned from 1953 - 1966. All were President hardtops with V8 engines. Some were automatics - some were stick shifts. He owned Golden Hawks and Gran Turismo Hawks. We were the only family I knew of that was loyal Studebaker Sport Car owners.

Now that is the right profile. Smooth with no B pillar. But Lou, you know how prejudiced I am. I would need to get rid of the chrome bow over the rear window, the shiny around the wheel wells, the silly chrome arrow down side, tack-on BU lights and the obtuse presentation of the front grill. I really believe by this time they were just trying to follow the herd. They did improve the engine options even the four-speed transmission but they just kept adding the bling. I still yearn for my 53 Commander. 3:43 Now that is cool and I recognize right away, memories of Mom's Golden Hawk . No criticisms here Lou and I do appreciate the fine presentations.👍

My name's John Hand. As a punk high school kid in Ohio I was driving my father's 55 Chevrolet BelAir four door in 1955 with a 2 barrel single exhaust V8, 162 HP. I was beating everyone, Ford, Plymouth, Dodge, anyone who had automatic. Something that helped: I had learned about 'humping up' the automatic transmission. Hold left foot on brake, floor the throttle, then release the brake. This gave me an edge, badly needed, to beat Fords and Plymouths at the jump, enough that even though their better automatics worked hard, they never could catch me before that fine high revving Chevrolet engine got going. I never came up against any 54-55 Buick Centuries though. If that had happened, I would have been beaten, bad. By then those Dynaflow transmissions had been greatly improved performance wise. The Chevrolet Powerglide in 1955 was still known as Slip and Slide with Powerglide. We'd usually race on the Wellsville, East Liverpool road, a newly constructed concrete divided 4 lane along the Ohio River between the two towns. That stretch of beautiful Ohio Route 7 was long enough for most of us to reach our top speeds of 98 to 105. I was a book fanatic and I remember distinctly one of the major magazines (Motor Trend?) quoting top speeds of the basic V8 two barrel carb models with automatic for Ford, Chevrolet, Plymouth, and the respective speeds top end were 96, 98, and 99. Yes, the Plymouth was supposed to be one MPH faster than my Chevrolet and we confirmed it one night on the road to East Liverpool when I beat the Plymouth by almost a couple of car lengths to 60 and to over 80 by maybe another half length. We kept going, going, going. All the time, the Plymouth was coming up slowly in the left lane. We went almost three miles I think, and as he was even with my back fender we were coming into ELO and I shut down. We were now in town. Some of the guys said I had quit because I did not want to be passed. That was not true because I had already quoted the reported top end figures to everyone present before the race. One day the local 55 Speedster in white and black wanted to drag me. I told him OK but you will beat me because you have stick and I have Powerglide. 2 in my car, 2 in his. I didn't notice it on the featured car in the video but I seem to remember that the 55 Speedster I raced had a checkered flag pattern in the side chrome along the back side. Perhaps Studebaker made another version of the Speedster that was not based on the President? He beat me of course, and kind of hard to remember, but it was about 2 car lengths to 60 and pulling away. I told him there was another guy in the area with a 55 Chevrolet Stick V8 who had the dual pipes and no four barrel and said that guy could beat him. (By then I was a died in the wool Chevrolet V-8 fan) He didn't believe me and off they went. I don't know if that race ever came about. One more comment. That Studebaker engine had one flaw. I heard but never confirmed that it weighs as much as a Cadillac V8 from the time. Despite all that weight, it only displaces 259 cubes, even smaller than the first Chevrolet small block at 265 inches. When this video shows that printed Studebaker spec sheet, I noticed somewhere in there after freezing the video that there was an optional higher compression ratio of 8.0. Never knew that. Wonder what that did for the 185 HP rating. A favorite thing for builders was to install the Cad engine in the 53 and 54 Studebakers and call them Studillacs.

You will have to excuse me. I used to be the editor of Car and motorcycle mags in California back in the early 70s, etc, so am kind of long winded. Not afraid to do some typing you can see. Before they invented Studillacs, there was the Fordillac. In 1958 I had a buddy that put a 54 Cadillac V8 in a 49 Chevrolet and it became the Chevillac. Since it was lighter than a Caddie and had (at that time) the great GM Hydramatic transmission, he could beat just about anyone off the line, and in most cases, stay ahead for the next whatever distance. That is, until I brought my 42 Ford coupe with a bored and stroked Oldsmobile V8 installed back from California which also had 25 tooth Lincoln Zephyr gears (Geared high, go to almost 60 in first and over 90 in second in my three speed transmission). I luckily had a good start off the line, didn't spin too much and though he had 'humped up,' (left foot on brake, right foot on the floor, release brake) he only got ahead by a few feet off the line, and after that, I was gone. He couldn't believe it. I had purchased that rare 42 Ford coupe with the Olds motor for a trade ($100 47 Buick) and $30 cash. Transmission was out, only had reverse and third gear, so the owner was desperate for transportation. That's how it ended up with me putting in the Zephyr gears that I purchased from well known DeltaMachine dragster owner Gary Cagle at the San Gabriel Dragstrip for $10.. So John Hand, with a $130 car plus $10 in repairs had beaten the famous Tri-state area (OH, WV, PA) Chevillac. At that time I had joined the Army and was on my way from Ft Ord way going out of the way to the Tri-State area and then south to Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. $78 a month to start. Make it to PFC E-3 and you got $99. I learned to make the best I could with that money. Not having to pay rent for housing helped. But I ate off base a lot, as did all the guys. Somehow, usually had the extra dollar or two for you know, dating, car, maintenance, etc. Insurance? What was that? There were some great trades I made in those days, like in '59 in Las Cruces NM (White Sands Missile Range) trading a clean 53 Olds for a chopped 27 T 5 window coupe on 32 rails with a 225 HP 56 Corvette engine. And yes, it had the treasured 32 Grille. Even swap. Those were the days.

Unfortunately for the people in South Bend IN superior styling and engineering alone didn't sell them enough cars any longer in the late fifties. And they had to compete with the big 3, who could produce in volume and afford to make no more than $25-50 profit per sold car.

The '56 Golden Hawk used the then new 352 Packard V8 for one year only, there's a fellow here on KZbin, Jonathan W who is fixing a '56 Golden Hawk and I have to agree that the Packard engine is big and bulky, similar IMO to the International V8 used in the light duty trucks as well as Loadstar trucks and buses from the fifties to the eighties.

I can't speak for the Golden Hawk, but the Silver Hawk I owned was a rust maker. The floorboard actually rusted away, including the gas pedal hinge mounted to it. This was the worst car I ever owned but the good thing was I had to gain some automotive education to repair this thing myself. An E-3 in the Air Force didn't make enough money to pay for mechanics to do the work in 1963.

Awesome car. And most people don't even know what a Studebaker is.They made probably the most reliable cars in the world. It is sad that now people drive around in plastic throw away cars that are just crap. And they think they own a car. They own a vehicle that has no style, and no pride and is made of cheap materials. People just don't seem to get it anymore. There is quality and there is crap. And quality is gone. But people do not see what they have lost. They tool around in a cheap horribly made machine and yack on their stupid cell phones. Disgusting.

president/hawk was a modern, if not downright futuristic vehicle. the slick lines of the car lack the outlandish excesses of the big three auto producers. look at the cadillacs for 53-55. enough chrome on 'em? big shiny and heavy. give me a speedometer that reads up to 160. not to mention: a TACH that reads up to 8000 rpm. an american roadster. i thing porsche stole the type font that we see on this vehicle for the 356 speedster. so very similar in appearance.

There was a Stude dealer near my childhood home in Milwaukee. Beautiful styling but a reputation for poor build quality. Once the stank of failure was on them people stopped buying because nobody wants to buy a new car that they can't get parts and service for. Of course they could... but that was the perception.

I don't really understand quality issue unless it had to do with corrosion prevention. I have restored several cars and the Studebakers trim chrome and stainless is as quality as any European car, far better than any American make. I don't think Americans were willing to pay for the quality, as we just rolled over the car payment every three years when the new body styles came out. I think the big three understood that new car financing was limited to 3 years and matched their changeovers. Studebaker could not afford to do that. Studebaker attempted to emulate Mercedes, but the Europeans kept their cars far longer so could amortize the extra cost for the quality over many more years.

It's a really beautiful car making the Chevrolets and Fords of that era seem plain and boring. The engine, however, sounds rather crude, or perhaps poorly maintained, with lots of valve train noise you don't hear from say a 1950's Chevy 283 small block. I think Studebaker was ahead of their time in some ways but couldn't pull off the whole package as well as the big three.

The Studebaker V8 had solid lifters like you would find in the high performance version of the Corvette or Thunderbird. The lower performance versions of v8 engines used hydraulic valve lifters that required less maintenance, were quieter but were not as reliable.
