Yes, 1956, That was when I was in my prime at 18, Claud Buttler, No 1 Bike frame builder for London, But I had my bike frame built by Condor cycles. They were a lot cheaper and just as good with fancy scrolled lug work, ( I'm useing a 10" Samsung tablet for this comment, And it's doing the thinking for me, It's on thought mode. ) I'm impressed with the Dutch, They have made an industry out of restoring there antique bycicles. The big step in too bike feels as if I was riding in an arm chair. And a woman in full evening dress would have no difficulty stepping on or off one of those splendid upright antique bicycles. 1957 At Bagshot, The 1st year of the, National Cyclo-cross championship in the U.k. I road with the Army team, 68 of us at the start, 28 finished, I think,! Very disauganized, I came in 2nd to last. I got a good ovation from the 50 or so spectators. Most of them were friend's of mine.

Last year I took my fathers 26" Diskus bike from 1955 and gave it a complete overhaul. It was in much worse shape than yours. The only thing I left untouched was the frame. All other parts went through a total restaurarion incl new chrome for the cranks, steering, brakes, etc. It was a lot of work but it payed off when I presented it to it's owner in october '18 for his 80st birthday!

Well done! I prefer the preservation route to full on restoration. I'd rather the frame have a nice patina than a respray. It's only original once, as they say.
@MonkeyShred8 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I have a 1946(ish) Norman Rapide in the pipeline too. It's still showing all the original transfers, albeit very faded, but the top tube seems to have suffered from, I guess, a lot of sweat dripping on to it. I'm borderline whether to send it to be professionally refurbished or preserve the bike. Tough choice on this one.
@Sooperhans36368 жыл бұрын
Man, you get your hands on some properly old bicycles! I haven't done anything earlier than a 1972 Atala Record Professional. I just touched up a mid 80's Peugeot road frame with a similar issue. I sanded back the rusted area to bare metal, coated it with rust converter (Kurust in the UK) which turns it black. Then I matched the paint as best I could using enamel model paints (going to try automotive lacquers next time) and touched it up with a brush. It looks okay as is but I'm going to try and distress the touched up area with a heat gun to match the age of the original paint on the frame. Hopefully it'll work out. Keep up the good work!

That is one heck of a classy restoration job mate, the temptation to respray and re-chrome is so strong, I don't know how you resisted but am glad you did and to keep the rich patina is fantastic. Is one of the things I love about cycling is how every bike tells a story and you have certainly kept the story alive there. Also great to see the made in England on the rims and brakes. How do you ever put a price on a bike like that, impossible is what I'd say. Well done.

very nice job. If you're not a stickler for keeping everything original, I would suggest looking in to new brake levers and calipers. Tektro R340 and R560 respectively are perfect for these bikes, but with the more modern design that allows for more effective braking and allows you to brake from the hoods. Sunringle makes replacement rims for these size wheels which also greatly increase braking power. Nothing else on the bike needs improvement, imo.
