I had a 1956 Hillman Californian for my 2nd car around 1968. (My first was a wreck of a Morris Minor, split screen , but okay to learn to drive in). I remember the Californian had leather bucket seats and a column gear change - very posh in my eyes. The metal linkage of the gear system broke when I drove down to Wales one time and as I continued on my journey, the gears were disappearing one by one, which was a bit of a problem when going up the Welsh hills! Luckily, one of my Welsh Uncles was a welder and fixed it for me. It was always breaking down and in the end I had to go to evening classes for car maintenance to learn how to keep it going. Another time I drove 609 miles to Scotland for a wedding and 609 back - the only problems were I had to get a replacement radiator cap and also had a puncture. Everyone was saying I'd never get there in one piece, how I proved them wrong. In the end, sadly, it had to go to the scrapyard, but I still have fond memories of it. Jeanette.
