On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago at the Cadillac Nationals on 6-24-22.
We're looking at a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham 4 Door in Jamaican Green Paint with the Factory 365 CI V8 engine, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Glenn Brown. Glenn’s had this car since 1997. Glenn’s the current President of the Cadillac Club. He shares the Owner of this car was getting no offers to buy the car and almost went to the junk yard if he didn’t make an offer and buy it. This car at the time was one of the most expensive cars on the road. The car has all the style, class, comfort, and many options that showcased what General Motors had to offer in 1957.
ENJOY!

Engineered and marketed by General Motors to "outclass" the 1956 and 1957 Continental Mark II, the 1957 Eldorado Brougham was the "halo car of GM", weighed 5,315 pounds, and cost a staggering (for the time) $13,074 (about the cost of a decent middle-class home in the late 1950s). Basic styling was derived from GM's own Park Avenue and Orleans show cars of 1953/1954. Exterior paint choices were extensive along with 44 interior upholstery trim combinations, and carpeting was either Mouton (lamb pelt) or Karakul (sheep wool). Standard equipment included air suspension, "thin whitewalls", automatic trunk lid opener, automatic "memory seat", Cruise Control, electric antenna, electric door locks, air conditioning, Autronic eye, etc. The atomizer contained Lanvin Arpege perfume (expensive French perfume). There were no options as the car was considered fully equipped...buyers only chose exterior paint and interior trim. Production was 400 units in 1957 and 304 units for the similar 1958 model. These 1957 and 1958 models were built in Detroit, but the heavily redone 1959 and 1960 Eldorado Broughams were instead hand built by Pininfarina in Italy. Retail prices stayed constant at around $13,000 for the four model years. GM lost $3,000 for every Eldorado Brougham that was built...FoMoCo lost $1,000 for every Continental Mark II that was built.

I think that the only "option" was a choice of two different kinds of actual sheep hide carpeting... Something like karakul curly lamb or fuzzy sheepskin... Everything else was "standard".... Ought to have been for almost Fourteen Grand!
@SpockvsMcCoy
@SpockvsMcCoy 2 жыл бұрын
@@slicksnewonenow Mouton is from a lamb pelt and Karakul is the wool from sheep, both exotic materials. The Eldorado Brougham had no options that cost extra. Customers still selected the exterior paint color, seat upholstery, and one of two carpets. Supposedly about 50 percent of the 1957/1958 models had either white or black paint.

Lou, firstly, what a car - stainless steel roof, magnetized tumblers, suicide doors, early tech easy door and trunk, vanity kits - you name it and this car has it. Thanks for bringing this beauty to us. Secondly, what’s with the other cars pulling out? Wow! Thirdly, I am so impressed with community you are building. Elvis had a couple Cadillacs by 1957, but this one might have been even too expensive for him….. regular deVilles, Eldorados, and Fleetwoods were in the $4500-$6k price range in 1957. This particular Eldorado Brougham was $13,000. The equivalent of $130,000 today. And with only 250 made for the entire year you needed to get on the ordering list early.

This car was so far ahead of its time. GM threw the kitchen sink of every bit of tech and design they had in 1957 at it. You might not have realized when you were looking at the power seat controls on the door it actually has two position memory!! In 1957, long before computer memory that modern cars use!! This car stickered for $13,000 at a time when a fully loaded 1957 Chevy Bel Air with air conditioning was $2800!!! And GM still lost money on every one they sold!!

Power seats with memory positions did not reappear until the early 1980s. The air suspension was perhaps the only truly unreliable feature. Two separate 1957 Cadillac 60 Special sedans with options equaled the cost of a single 1957 Eldorado Brougham.

Oh, yes. It was a gorgeous, deep blue. The upholstery was lighter blue and white. My mother had a 1958 Buick Roadmaster, white, with light blue interior, and I remember that the seat fabric was similar, but more plush. By the way, her Buick also had the air suspension, but my parents had it converted to springs. Another rich neighbor had a creme-colored 1957 Lincoln Premiere with white and turquoise interior and a continental kit. It also had AC, with the scoops and the plastic tubes, which fascinated me. Cool car! If I'd been willing to spend the cost of a nice home in 1957, I think I'd probably go with the Mark II, 'cause the Rolls-Royce still had the ancient though smooth straight six, a crude form of power steering was finally installed and a very rudimentary air conditioner. The M-B 300 sedan was very underpowered with no power steering, no automatic and no air conditioning. The Jaguar sedan had enough power but again, no air conditioning and heaven help you if you broke down outside the few major cities. This one is a real beauty, and many thanks to the gentleman for sharing it with us!

WoW, Lou, one of the best cars you have shown. I was born in 1957, yet I feel like I might have seen one of these cars in the late 1960s. Interestingly, Glenn Brown does not even fit in the car! I had an interview in South Chicago in the early 1980s and what I remember about that area is that most people were much taller than me! I did not get the job, but it was a fun experience, and the Priest (Head of the School) gave me $50 to return to my home state.

Jack Benny used to drive one of those - not sure whether or not Benny's was invisible ;-). The suicide doors make it a unique model among other 1950's Cadillacs. I seem to remember hearing that that model sold for about $10k, a lot of money for a car back then. The battery in the trunk is also unique - no doubt not enough room under the hood with the brake power assist and A/C compressor. Enjoyed the owner's great sense of humor.

Harley Earl built a black prototype El Dorado Brougham concept car in Town Car body style for the 1956 GM Motorama. The prototype was sent to Warhoops salvage yard to be scrapped in 1958 but they put it away in storage for 40 years until classic concept car collector Joe Bortz acquired it and restored it in 1998.

Love that color, and those Dagmars! So named after a buxom '50's actress. The 4 headlight thing is weird. Depending what state they were sold in Mercury's had 2 or 4 headlights. It crazy to think states thought 4 headlights were dangerous. By '58 the goverment stepped in and mandated all cars have 4 headlights. Could you imagine cleaning all that gingerbread and that roof, ugh. Only GM car with suicide doors.It certainly is a time capsule, when bigger was better and gas was less than a dollar a gallon. Wished it hadn't rained that day, when are you gonna have a chance to see hundreds of Cadillac's? Thanks for showing it Lou.
