I got my $28,000 *Hot Red 1957 Chevy 2dr hardtop V8* car today and coming off the transit carrier it looked good. The seller Todd M. included many parts, which I have not reviewed yet. I have saved and waited for years to be able to buy a hot red 1957 Chevy 2dr hardtop V8 car. After I paid the driver I got the keys and I inspected the car. Read on.... Test driving was painful, not a happy thing to do as it was extremely hard to drive with the steering wheel pressing tight against my gut, which I do not have with any other car. The car is hard to steer as it tends to wander without constant control, not an easy drive. The steering wheel is jammed tight against my stomach even with the seat moved as far back as possible. The steering column is from another car, which has a tilt feature but does not telescope. The seat cannot be remounted further back without interfering with carrying passengers. The car has a crude paint job, with multiple rust spots bubbling up and showing just under the paint, which is hard to see at first without a closer look. The interior dash has been crudely painted black, which can be seen when sitting in the car. There are more faults that I will not list yet, the car sits in storage. I am six feet tall, weighing in at 290lbs and retired as an ASE Certified Master Mechanic before I went into real estate. .

@tonidmc that crash test video was a little flawed though. chevy was the manufacturer usung x-frames by 59. the implala had an obvilous respray (organge to pink. most likely done to hid body repair). the implala also dumped alot of rust during the crash, so it begs to question the structural integerty of the steel in the implala. but yes there have been inprovments in saftey over the last 50 years or so, which is what that video was shown for. but cost and weight have also increased as well.

Even though radial tires we’re not suitable for the older cars unless the front ends have been upgraded

Yes, the older cars especially 1957 Chevy's have a classic style. But, the original tires, brakes, & suspension were not so great. They called these babies lead sled boat cars for a good reason. Take a turn in a totally original car and it would lean like a boat. Also bad brakes makes slow stopping ability. Now a days these things can all be corrected and these cars are wonderful to drive and take on trips. But, you just have to watch where you park them. These classics get stolen fast and are easy to hot wire/ tow away. US Customs found one stolen 25 years ago in a container at a CA port. The old owner was contacted after vin number check. The car was completely restored and in better condition then when stolen. So, the former owner was very happy to see his old chevy again. Enjoy your classic rides and be careful. Have a great day!

noo...putting disks up front bows the tires out and it doesn't look right. It's all about the aesthetic with these cars.

animalcorvair A well setup and adjusted drum setup works just fine. The problem arises when people up the horsepower and such and expect to get them to stop the same. These cars were designed to ride and drive straight not drive in the Lemans. They do lean in curves if taken to fast but there again they were not designed for performance driving. One of the best upgrades you can do for saftey on these is upgrade the master cylinder to a dual bowel set up.p and even adding a power booster helps and is easily done. You can get disc brake setups that fit and do not effect the stance of the car and can use the factory rims and caps. Like I said if you're going to add horsepower and performance to the drivetrain then you must upgrade the suspension and braking that goes without saying. For practical reasons a rear shock support bar should be mounted to the frame to change the location of the factory shocks to remove them from the trunk sheet metal. This why most of these cars had problems in the rear shock mount area as it was not reinforced enough....especially when people added more horsepower.

@Indogyearsimdead older cars are just fine for a daily driver. i drove my AMX everyday for 2 1/2 years. was hit by a mid-90s Chevy 2500 in a parking lot. I had a dent in the rear 1/4 and a chip out of my spoiler. he had a bent bumper, smashed headlight and wrinkled fender. i fixed my car by knocking out the dent and a little touch up paint. it took me maybe 30 mins.

The title stated driving souds. You never even started the car! Looks like a two barrel air cleaner. The power-pack 283 4 barrel had a different air cleaner. Glad someone dumped the Powerglide for possibly a 700-R4.

@Indogyearsimdead You cannot honestly compare the two. Most everyone that drives a classic car for many miles will upgrade the brakes, suspension, seatbelts, and change ignition and breather parts to make them more efficient. But if you and Mr Structural Integrity are happy with your pressed aluminum cookie cutter appliance car, and you feel safe with the airbag that doesn't work half the time, live long and be well. I'll take the car with actual style from when America actually built autos

@Odinvahalla I thought just the same as you until i saw a video... search on you tube a video about a crash test between a 59 Impala and 09 Montecarlo, its dificult to belive the fact that the 50's car has nothing to do against a modern car in a crash.

Bel-Air sounds more better then a damn Volt
@UmmYeahOk
@UmmYeahOk 4 жыл бұрын
Well yeah the Volt doesn’t really have an exhaust note. I realize your comment is 8 years old, but the 2nd gen Volt had a much better range, and therefore could be used as a pure EV. With 50 years of difference, that’s like comparing the Bel Air with an appliance at that point. Not only will it sound different but handle differently. It a completely different driving experience. Neither vehicle is bad for it. In fact, I’d imagine the Bel Air being more fun.

The crash with '59 and the newer Monte Carlo is a crock!! there is no engne in the '59...watch the crash very closely!!! The only reason older cars are not around is because they were driven so much and they rusted! The maintenance is very low and easy to fix! New ones are a pain...try changing a fuel pump on a new car!! They are ugly and have no art or definition to them! It all comes down to how you take care of it and how you drive it! I prefer older cars!!

keno8spot You might pass but these cars are far more rare than hardtop. They only made 60 thousand of these verses well over 168k of the 2 door hardtop model so more than two to one or there abouts. These are about as rare as convertibles and the Nomad in 57 is rarest of them all with less than 6k produced. These were Belair model numbers as the 210 and 150 models for the year had different production numbers. All in all they are all worth lots as even one in bad shape being a two door can run you close to 10k for starters.
