1957 Chevy Bel Air Road Test drive for you guys to get an idea about the idiosyncrasies of driving a vintage car of the 1950s. The brakes got scary towards the end as these cars were known when new to overheat the drum brakes quickly. If you guys have stories of these cars or any car of this period please share in the comments below I would love to hear them all.

My dad used to have one from 1966-68, when we were living in LA. It was a 4-door hard top, red with white top. Now we're back in Tokyo. My dad passed away six years ago, and there is one for sale at an import shop not too far away from where I live. It is exactly the same color and it is a 4-door hard top. The shop is asking some $40,000, and I haven't decided to buy it or not. Thank you for all your comments on how it is to own a 57 Chevy.

I have seen bad drivers of today's vehicles even at 4 way stops some are bad to stop for 10 seconds yet go for 1 second to proceed. So old cars are not bad

Would have liked to see it driven on a highway just to see what it can do. But it brought back memories as my Dad had late 50's pink Cadillac convertible (don't remember the exact year). I hated the color at the time as I thought it was a bit effeminate, now I think it would be a Mary Kay car LOL! I guess it was difficult to come to a complete stop at the stop signs due to the lack of braking power. But what about running the red light at 13:53 in the video? Not trying to be a wise guy or put you down, but as an ex law enforcement officer I just notice these things. Thanks for this and all your videos.

pedal was going to the floor hence the rolling stops it was scary trying to stop this car that day. its not coming back out until the customer approves a total brake overhaul.

Great video, as always. Had to laugh when you said you just had a $60 fill-up. When I was in high school a $60.00 gas station tab meant besides a fill-up you also got 2 new tires and an oil change!

My mother had a '56 Chevy. What memories watching this video. You flipped a chrome piece on the tail light to drop the entire light and voila-- there's the gas tank. And he's right about the horn. None of this Japanese city horn crap you get nowadays.

Exactly, I couldn't stand him once he said that, practically salivating over how he can ruin a hard to find state of stock autombile, definitely cheap aftermarket bias plys..they worked so much better in the 1950's, but I'm almost sure he thinks the fastest car in 1950 had a top speed of 40 and took 20 seconds to reach it. Lost cause frankly. I can't believe we have to remind people this car is not brand new, and they need to stop trying to unfairly compare it to it's original date as though the drum brakes have always been that loose, and that it was difficult to drive.

You need to drive a 57 Chevy with power steering and power brakes! It makes a world of difference!!! I've driven both. I miss my 57 Belair 2 door sport coupe and a Californian car! The 1 piece front bumper was known as the Californian bumper back in the day.

“It’s fun, it’s an experience.” Yeah, any time you can arrive at your destination safely, and without any drama, it’s a major achievement. You feel amazing, like you’ve accomplished something. You just don’t get that same feeling from a modern car.

I'm working on my 57 Bel Air today. Doing the mandatory 60 year control arm bushing and ball joint replacement. Built like a tank. I am doing the Wilwood front brake replacement. But otherwise, more fun than a barrel of monkeys.Just don't zip your rice burner in front of me, because you will be the one who dies. Parts are easy to find and the car is actually repair friendly - not like unrepairable new cars. Did a fuel pump, water pump, alternator for less than $180

I've seen better, that color was the worst choice, I'm almost sure it was aftermarket. People in the 1950's knew how to have an automobile, people usually imagine the 1950's as harsh turquoise blue, red, yellow, and bright green cars cruising down the road but really it was all rich Iridescent Dark greens, reds, gold, the very very very popular court gray in Hollywood, and dusk pearl, and alpine blue very popular by 1952.

these cars are dropping in value so much last two years now is the time to get a 50s classic. I do not see them going up again as trends and the market really has changed quite a bit. I am looking to buy another 1955 T Bird soon once I find the right car.

Imagine going back to 1957 and telling the original owner this car would be worth $100,000+ in the year 2020. Who knows, with inflation and appreciation it may be worth a mil in 2057.

So what kind of gas do you put in it? Given that it was designed for leaded higher octane gas, than what we have at the pump now. I assume the valve guides and other things were rebuilt with modern materials during its rebuild?
@autofanaticcars

Robert Sole hi test as they called it 😉 just 93 runs well yes engine was rebuilt somewhere along its lifespan to run on this garbage fuel we have the biggest issue is the ethanol destroys seals and floats in the carburetor on old cars

If the engine was rebuilt in the 80s or later it's probably fine for unleaded fuel.
