Finally getting the '57 straightened up and sanded in preps for paint. What color should we go with? If you're reading this, I'm probably still sanding. #bornfreebuilds #57chevy #trifive

I learned a lot on this episode. Don't get discouraged on all that sanding. It's worth it in the end. You're doing a great job.

My Dad would paint our vehicles when they got to the point where they needed a paint job or sometimes to make a color change. Now he only had a vibrator sander (mainly used for wood working) an electric grinder (mainly used to rough up metal and take off paint). He had some body flat sanding blocks and plenty of elbow grease. Of course cars like your 57 Chevrolet were used cars back when I was growing up and they were not in the shape that yours is in. The secret to a good paint job is sand, sand, sand. Preparation and patience produces a good paint job. Dad used bondo but he used it sparingly after doing the basic body work (I forgot he did have a few body hammers and dollys one of each I think). He put out as good of a paint job as most body shops in the day. Keep up your efforts and you will come out with a serviceable paint job that will last. I would prefer a factory color combination used by GM in the nineteen fifties if the car were mine.

Nice project, what kind of body filler are you using?

Automotive Art Eurofil Gold. This is my first project with this brand, however it seems to spread and sand better than other brands I have used in the past.

Body filler is hydroscopic, meaning it absorbs water, I would definitely be careful wet sanding your filler work, it may look dry,but down in the pore's of the filler it holds water like a sponge, great work and great video's, just a friendly word of advice from someone that has made plenty of mistakes doing body work 👍

Are you going to put new rims or rehab the originals
@bornfreebuilds

Unfortunately the originals have a bit more rust that I’d like to be able to save them. Constantly looking through marketplace in hopes to find some second hand that won’t kill our budget.

Check out episode 4 where we repaired a huge dent in this guys roof skin. It was quite the head scratcher to try and get corrected.

That probably came from people sitting up on the roof. We had a 56 Chevrolet we were removing most of the paint off and Dad was up in the roof of the car taking the paint down to metal with his sander and when he got done he realized he had put a crease in the roof from his weight lying up there doing the removal. I have a 46 GMC that I had acquired many years ago and it had been in a vehicle fire and the hood seemed to be warped from the heat. Not so the hood was creased from people sitting on it. The roof of the truck was also creased from people sitting on it.
