Great to see someone who can truly rebuild things. Talent that is not taught anymore. Thank you.

Last time I went through one of those was in 1970 in an automotive classroom, but it all came back to me as you carried us along with you. When you started to thread the adjuster screw into the cover I said, "put a screwdriver into the hole and turn the screw", glad you heard me. And after 53 years in the craft I did not even have to see the wire wheel grab that plug and snatch it away from you, I recognized the sound and the scene immediately inside my head.😁

I put that in there just for you! LOL!

That's funny !! I also heard that sound and was waiting for a "Jeff Frown" along with "It disappeared" !! ;o) I did a small batch of old Model A Tillotson carburetors recently. Wire wheeled all of the smalls to make them look like new parts. Most of them brass. Like the tiny 8/32 brass butterfly screws that are impossible to "securely" grip. Along the way, I had to do at least 3 "garage searches" for tiny pieces that the wheel caught and went "Ping" !! Somewhere over "yonder" if you even had a clue which direction it took off to. ;o(

Well... here it is on Christmas eve... and it struck me that we haven't heard from Jeff a waaaay out there on the end of the Oregon Trail for a while now. Perhaps he took on the TPT work of a Walmart Santa this year? Perhaps he tried to pull one engine too many and is pinned to the ground with the engine in his lap? Perhaps the chickens organized then went into full blown revolution mode and he's locked up in the coop while the little guys get all liquored up and party in the yard? Perhaps he's just too stinkin' busy to post any video footage and all is well on the farm? Yeah, that's probably it. With whatever it is, here's a very Merry Christmas to you Jeff along with all the Elderly Iron characters and fans worldwide, wherever you may be! May this Christmas be a time of healing, rest, love and joy shared with friends and loved ones. May the blessings continue for the last week of this year and extend on into 2024. Merry Christmas one and all! - Max Giganteum

Great content Jeff🍻greatly appreciate the wisdom and a laugh. I do have a question for you guys. Do the steering shaft worm, wear down some? Going to use 3boxs to make a good one. But only have 1 long steershaft.(the one I need,Chvy1955) Thanks
@ElderlyIron7 ай бұрын
The worm gears essentially never wear out. It's the ball nut and the sector shaft as shown in this series.

Very interesting project, never seen an old steering box apart. No question about it, you have the fastest ball peen hammer in the whole Northwest, and your gaskets fit. Any chance you will have your hands clean for church this Sunday? May still need those gloves. 😁 Good to see you Jeff.

When hole making in gaskets use end grain of wood so punch has something to sink into, just give it a try.
@ElderlyIron6 ай бұрын
Softer underlayment tends to tear or pull instead of making the cut. However, I've never tried end grain, so it's worth a try!
@Graveltrucking11 ай бұрын
Oh isn't it fun to feel that sharp edge slice open a finger😧 Things were simple operation back in 1957 no fancy self steering BS, manual steering gear nothing to cost you a fortune when it broke if it did ever break. I'm guessing if you used too thick of a grease it would cause too much drag those ball bearings wouldn't follow the direction of travel.
@jeremy399811 ай бұрын
Have you considered getting one of those new torque wrenches that says bleep instead of click?
@ElderlyIron11 ай бұрын
Yes, but my falsetto just isn't what it used to be...
@markamcampbell579511 ай бұрын
do you feel the cold in your leg. when I broke all 8 fingers I feel it on real cold days.
@ElderlyIron11 ай бұрын
Cold is not an issue so much as change in barometric pressure. Of course, mine has to hurt when the weather is going from bad to good!
@BlueSkyScholar11 ай бұрын
Shouldn't use grease with moly in ball screws it's friction is too low and causes the balls to skid and wear rather than circulate. Straight lithium grease will do something like SHC220.
@kevinharms757811 ай бұрын
Saginaw, and Gemmer Gear, ( Ross) ,TRW , all used a semi-solid grease, hard to find , but it's out there

what can i use to make diy exhaust manifold gasket?
@ElderlyIron11 ай бұрын
High temp gasket should be available. You might have to get it from a diesel shop. Big rig shops USED to make a lot of their own, but that was 30 years ago! You won't find it at any chain store, unless NAPA carries it. You have to go to the Mom and Pop shops. Just search "exhaust gasket sheet stock" online

The ball end of the hammer will work on the holes too won't it ??
@ElderlyIron7 ай бұрын
Yes, but you need a really small ball because there's hardly any flange around the outside of the hole.

Suppose to be filled with gear oil not grease.....
@ElderlyIron11 ай бұрын
Nyet... The gear lube will just flow out of it. The CV joint grease was the closest I could find to factory fill.
