Growing up in the 50’s, my dad took in a ‘57 Desoto 2-Dr hardtop on the sale of his ‘57 Merc Turnpike Cruiser, which was traded eventually for the purchase of ‘59 Merc Montclair 4-Dr to accommodate our growing family. I was not a big “Mopar” fan, but out of all their marques, the styling yet simplicity without all the side chrome and anodized panels affixed to the sides of many ‘57 vehicles that year, made that DeSoto a great looking car. Especially those sweeping fins, which blended perfectly with the body lines of the Adventure and other lower level models. Your presentation of that gold convertible was very well done, as are all the cars that you present. Keep up the great videos. You provide easy viewing of the classics which are now being appreciated by generations, well, at least my grandchildren, who never had the opportunity to ride in those cars when they were new.

I admire him for that. I’ve never seen the dashboard of a Desoto in detail. Looks 1950’s elegant and chromey, in a good way. Beautiful color combination

The owner is an awesome person he bought the car new he is the original owner had a couple other cars went to Vietnam.. his dad kept the car for him and he had had it ever since one repaint in the 60s.. it started on the button. This car had presence that new cars don’t I shot two cars yesterday the second car is a personal favorite of mine so it will be up Mondayish have to space this out I’m in the process of shooting 100th episode totally different episode (best car for a broke millennial, A lot of other channels are doing videos like that and nobody has made mention of a vehicle like this) it’s gonna be a very fun episode totally outside the box.

Beautiful car with an amazing color. The late 1950s through the 1960s were the era of the convertible; before drivers withdrew to their air conditioned cocoons. In his military service, my uncle bought a convertible Sunbeam, a British made sports car with an American Chrysler engine under the hood. From England my uncle brought the car back to Phoenix, his hometown, and he showed off his prized possession to me and my grandad, by driving us at night with the ragtop down. Alas, he had to drive it at night for the car had a cooling system built for the weather of England and it overheated and backfired with loud snaps and pops. After a year my uncle traded the small sports car in for a Ford Falcon convertible and I rode in it too, but on towels to prevent my legs from frying on the dark red leather seats.

Sunbeam is a car I want to feature some day they are rare here.. Shelby story plays into that story I think he went with ACE body instead vary similar tho so many lost and forgotten cars that are going to be brought to life on this channel I’m stoked for Monday’s episode I shot both the desoto and Monday’s feature yesterday.. met some really cool people as well and the thing about these cars is they have souls.. and a presence new cars just don’t have. Rolling art could have in two tone colors in the 50s door gaps aren’t perfect in most of them but who cares it’s not about that. When I drive my 52 I love being part of the experience. Shifter clicks into gears it’s fun the rev the engine all the way out in third. It’s way more fun then a dually should be =)

@@What.its.like. My prized possession was a convertible too, a 1956 VW Beetle convertible. My dad custom ordered the car while he was serving in the Air Force at Frankfurt Germany (I was born there at the time). The car’s paint was a deep olive green metallic and the top and upholstery was an ivory tan color. It had a European Blaplunket (misspelling) tube-type radio that had an unusually deep and rich sound, for VWs of that era had much larger speaker grills in the center of the dash. There was the usual for the time button on the floor for the high beams and under the dash there was a lever for the auxiliary emergency gas tank that held about a gallon, for the car didn’t come with a gas gauge. There was a four speed transmission that was synchronized on the top 3 gears. The steering wheel was large and bus-like but except in a strong crosswind, the car handled precisely with a light feel. The car was hopelessly underpowered and it never could exceed 67 mph except going downhill; but it was a hoot to drive and ride in. I received that car as a graduation gift in 1974, and I drove it for another 12 years but had to get rid of it for I could not find anyone competent to service it in Tacoma where I lived.

That was great story until the ending, I know what that’s like tho been there I had a karman Ghia 73 but looked like a late 60s it would go 80 comfortably 32 mpg on the Hwy, it was like driving a high powered lawn mower and more room in that car than 55-56 thunderbird or to 54 corvette. 56 beetle convertible must be rare not sure when convertibles came out but that seems pretty early I know vw started late 30s on the beetle I’m not as up on that car as other cars.

The owner is a great guy, hope to catch up with him this summer. He was telling me he is the second owner and he bought this car when he was 17/18 he had a great job and had three cars and then got drafted his dad sold all of his cars but that one. It’s a time capsule. (It has some custom bits but all in good taste, still has the period steering wheel, and isn’t on air bags with the donk wheels). But yeah it’s a rare car I haven’t seen one since

I love Tom McCahill Uncle Tom I honestly think Jeremy clarkson modeled his style after him, when I do a 58 Edsel Tom McCahill has a review of it I’m going to put that in there I plan on hitting every single edsel offering ever made just like every single car if I can find them trim levels and such, so if you don’t see all the ads or if there’s a commercial for something and you didn’t see it it’s likely to come up later on just so it doesn’t get redundant and repetitive and keep it fresh and new information each time or something different each Time.

It’s great to see these cars featured. Cars of that era had character. Today when I’m next to a car at all a light I have to look at the logo on the wheels to tell what make car it is. The interior colors are all black or gray it seems as well… very generic. You’re doing a great job. Thank you.

I was thinking yesterday if I could travel to any time period to live I’d pick 50s or 60s era and stay there.. people respected other people was it a perfect world probably not but far better than what’s going on now. I always get the vibe just being in the cars from this time period and then talking to the owners.. I wasn’t there but at the same time it feels like I should have been.. it’s crazy just an old soul I guess. Respect is a thing people don’t have anymore, and common sense..if I’m out and I see someone struggling with a heavy package object I’ll help them it’s in my DNA or if I see a bigger object coming at me I move out of the way. My kids no matter how much I try and correct them it’s like the new generations just think I’m here they will move or someone else will get it.. it’s a small thing but that’s were it starts. I guess the three biggest problems are there isn’t respect for anything anymore, lack of common sense, and the ignorance levels are just so high it’s unbelievable but just my opinion

“57” had single headlights, “58” had dual headlights. Also, HiWay Hifi record players played 16 2/3rds rpm records that were the same diameter as a “45”. It had a small diameter spindle like a 33 1/3rd record. I owned a “57” Dodge Custom Royal Lancer 2 door hardtop. I also had the factory HiWay Hifi record player in my car. I still have several of the recordings, sadly, it the car!

Designer and concept by Virgil M. Exner Sr. He took DeSoto into the stratosphere with this futuristic car, one of the most impressive cars of Chrysler's new Forward Look! Exner was renowned for designing exotic concept cars for Ghia in Italy, and for both Chrysler and Ghia on their collaborative efforts.

These Chrysler products from 57-59 made everything from Ford and GM look like last week's donuts. Very flashy and sexy, my favorite DeSoto is the 59 model year. GM finally caught up in 59, Ford in 60, but for awhile Chrysler led the design pack. Which is polar opposite to how they started the 50's.

Loving the color + it's a convertible (rare) Chrysler was an engineering company. It was still only 12 years after WW2 when not only did cars improve technically, but stylishly & with great comfort. Most certainly making the average growing family a 2 car family as well. I loved watching Groucho Marx sell these on his TV show. Art imitates life. YT Channel The Flinstones- Car Chase cartoon title "Fred's second car season #5." The fins on that car suggest a Desoto. There were plenty of cool looking cars on that show. That was one of them. By the time that toon was made fins had all but disappeared. Thanks to you Jay + the generous/ gracious owner.

The first thing I noticed it the missing name and trim on the front of the hood. Without it, it is a sleeker look, but those familiar with cars of this era would notice it immediately. Chrysler cars had the "Highway Hi-Fi" record player option for a few years. They played special records, but not 45's. They were usually mounted to the underside of the dash, but not on the transmission hump as this 45 player is mounted. Not a real good place to mount it. It's where the center passenger would normally put their feet. Girlfriends liked to ride there next to the driver. These 45 rpm players came out years after the original "Highway Hi-fi". The 45 players were more practical, but were best played with the car parked. When Muntz introduced the 4-track tape cartridge player, it was all over for the car record players. By the way, when you were in the back seat, did you notice the 45 rpm record carrier on the floor to your right? A Desoto with a Torqueflite is a rare animal, indeed. Even with a hemi the Powerflite was very common in Desotos. I think that Chrysler was using Desoto to use up their stock of Powerflites. Since 1956, most other Mopars I'd seen had Torqueflites. Maybe that's where Edsel got it's marketing aim, to unsophisticated people who thought they were sophisticated. Probably why the brands disappeared outside of these cars taking away business from their other car divisions. This example can be sighted as other brands were discontinued into the 2,000's when cars between divisions lost their identities and became clones of each other with just the name being different. Great Video, you explain very well every detail for newbies. But I've read and hear sometimes the opinion that there would only be 11 of them - but I've seen 9 for sale on the internet in the last 10 years alone, so I think there are far more than 11. Ed's 57 DeSoto Registry include 22 57' Adventurer Convertibles for example. 17 of them are in the US, 4 in Sweden and one in Italy. On the adventurer shown here on these video the fender ornaments are missing. It looks a bit naked around the front end. But i am not 100% sure if the fender ornaments are optional on Adventurers,- I have to check my Ross Roy Book, or Wayne's Restauration Guide. But without the spear on the hood,- thats original on Adventurer for sure. About the naked front end,- compare it with my super super rare 1957 Fireflite Shopper. /ToM

Except for the perhaps the Adventurer, one could also choose a three speed manual transmission on their DeSoto. That old owner's manual seen in the video would have sections covering both the push-button automatics and the gear shift version as well.

My first car, and favorite1956 DeSoto Fireflite, twin antenna, my Dad had the Fireflite Sportsman ( step up from Fireflite, ) and my Grandpa original owner 1956 Pacesetter. Took a picture of the three. Love the channel, and would like one of my cars featured someday.

Just got through watching your latest video on the 1959 DeSoto, so watched this one for comparison sake. Without taking body style into consideration, my pick would be the "59 because it is rarer. For unknown reasons DeSoto sales went up in '57 then kept dropping right after.

The De Soto is built with plenty of room for anyone to drive. Backthen not everyone could afford it. Just not a poor man's car. Certain people would've liked to have a De Soto. But had to pay bills instead.

I noticed right away that the long horizontal hood ornament, and the letters spelling out D E S O T O, are missing from the front part of the hood. Did the owner tell you what happened to them?

Yeah when he got the car repainted in the 60s he wanted more of a cleaner look he deleted them, I think he still has them it’s missing the markers on the top for the front fenders as well. His isn’t two toned like all the others I’ve seen in pictures the gold plating isn’t there.. I guess this car was only offered in three colors black and gold white and gold and then gold
