DeSoto was never part of Dodge. DeSoto sat between Chrysler and Dodge in pecking order and its price point competed with Oldsmobile and Mercury. DeSotos were fun to drive because of the torsion bars, they didn't wallow on the road like their competition. This DeSoto Adventurer is beautifully finished.

Yup… DeSoto was its own brand within the Chrysler Corporation. This example is beautiful and rare.

My family lived across the street where DeSotos were parked from the assembly plant waiting to be moved by rail or truck hauler until '58 when production was moved to Jefferson assembly on the east side. The plant was updated & became McGraw glass. The '57s seemed to be the most impressive looking & I remember an open house including a tour of the plant in late '56 on a Sunday. Chrysler seemed to do no wrong then & was celebrating the forward look of their car line. Great times & memories.

My grand-dad drove Dodges for years, and only DeSotos until they stopped making them (1959 I think). After that he drove Chrysler New Yorkers. DeSotos were fine cars. He was very disappointed when they ceased making them. The Chrysler line seemed to take up the slack left when DeSoto was discontinued. As for the trans selector, earlier models if DeSoto had a stick or paddle shifter located in the dash ... That was in the mid 50s. I'm thinking that the push button gear selectors were standard on all Chrysler Prod cars from around 57 through around the early 60s. My dad had a 59 Dodge sta wagon that had the push buttons as well. As for discontinuing the DeSoto line, it never really seemed to hurt Chrysler in sales. By the mid 60s, Dodge and Plymouth had their fair share in sales ... especially with the climb in the muscle cars of that era. This DeSoto was nicely restored and should sell quickly. The gold and white paint scheme was a very popular color combo for that Era as well.

They stopped in late 1960 as only a few were '61 models from obviously poor sales & were looking almost identical to Dodge & Chrysler.

@@robertchristie9434 By 1961, those DeSotos looked like rebadged New Yorkers, w/only little difference in grille pattern.

Fantastic car, and fine video. But a DeSoto was a DeSoto--not a "Dodge DeSoto." Separate divisions.

Electric windows and electrically adjustable seat! And that in 1957!! I don't think Mercedes even had anything like that in Europe at the time! But I could also be wrong!

Well, until the nineteen eighties here in Egypt we did not even know what power steering, power windows, or automatic transmission is 😂 We only had Italian and French cars that had zero features. They only had wheels, seats for the passengers, and a trunk and that is it. Then came the Korean cars and changed all that. Most luxury features became common and manual transmission became something from the past now.
