Most DeSotos made between 1947 until production of the make ended in 1961 were built at Chrysler’s DeSoto plant located at 8505 Warren Avenue in Dearborn, MI. It appears thar the rubber seals around the door vent windows either completely deteriorated or were removed for replacements but the job was never completed. The car looks amazing after the clean up! With such a great history, I could understand the future owner leaving it just the way it is; but if it were stripped down and given a showroom paint finish, I am sure the car’s original, loving owner would look down and smile with approval!

Side vent windows were found on nearly all cars until the mid-‘60s. It was a means to provide ventilation to the passengers. Air conditioning in cars of that era was almost unheard of and was only available in the most luxury brands. Vent windows were a blessing on hot summer days.

That warehouse of cars is a treasure trove of content! You folks hit the jackpot! At a casual glance, I saw an old Vauxhall, a Borgward, an 1950s-1960s Bentley S-series, and lots of interesting finds. You now have content for YEARS of videos! I recall the DeSoto was last sold in the US in 1961. I imagine it was made wherever they made Plymouths, Dodges, and Chryslers. One of the "Marx Brothers", Groucho, was famous for making DeSoto commercials. Continued good health and good luck to all of you!
@JTabarlet Жыл бұрын
DeSotos were often sold at Plymouth dealerships as an upgrade to the low-priced Plymouth. My mom told the story of her brother, my Uncle Jim, who as a small child in the 1950s, thought there was a car called the “Desotaplimmadilla.” He got that from listening to Groucho Marx on the radio saying “Be sure to visit your DeSoto-Plymouth dealer.”

Hate to say it BUT that lady's grandson was a FOOL for not keeping that Desoto. That is a beautiful piece of automobile engineering. And the fact that she worked on it herself is fabulous. When I was growing up, a elderly widow lady lived 2 houses up. She had a beautiful 1960's Plymouth sedan, (not sure of the model), that was a soft pink pearl with a white vinyl hardtop. Her late husband had left the car to her and it was rarely driven. After she passed, her nephew inherited the car, tried driving it at highway speed and blew the engine. It wasn't used to that because Mrs. Sobieski didn't drive. She had my dad drive it about once a month for her but other than that it sat in her garage. With a the engine blown, the nephew ended up sell "Pearl" to a salvage yard. My dad was so mad because he wanted the car and was going to fix her up. Such a waste.

Great content as usual. One car that immediately jumped out to me was the BMW Isetta. I'd love to see that little thing detailed. Also, there has been something that I have been wondering. When you use the power washer, why do you go from the bottom up instead of from the top down?
@Bearditwas Жыл бұрын
When you wash the bottom first, the rinse water from the top will keep the paint hydrated until you do final rinse. If you wash the top and work down, the soapy water can dry on top of the car by the time it is time to rinse. At least that's why I wash bottom to top.

My father had a 1947 Plymouth 4-dr Deluxe which was quite similar to the DeSoto and Chryslers of of same period. Few memories and observations: new autos during the immediate post-war period were hard to come by unless “you knew someone”; the turn signals, as was the side mirror, were a later after market add on; didn’t see it on this DeSoto but, the Plymouth had a lever under the center of the dash that opened a cooling vent just ahead of the outside windshield; heater was an option as was a six or eight tube MOPSR am radio. Great old cars. Thanks for the memories and a great presentation.

My uncle had a 57 sedan in that crazy 50s three colour paint scheme... black roof, mainly white body and fins with a broad wild coloured mid panel. His was Salmon pink but Robin's egg blue was also common. As regards the front door vent windows they are an anomaly that was offered perhaps in southern climes but would be crazy in cold or rainy areas.
