Dad took us up there on weekends to watch the gliders. Dick Essery was a neighbor.

Winch launching was fun, did some car tows if the wind was blowing . . Down wind landing with a 30k tail wind required turning final lower than the runway altitude , but the lift always picked you over the clifff

No the Golf Course is to the north of the glider port. The glider port is still used today. They had four contest going on during the meet. Duration for the longest time in the air soaring the cliffs back and forth from LaJolla to Del Mar. So an early launch time was important. Spot landing to see who could come closest to a pin in the ground which you saw a landing in the video. They would drop a plumb bob off the nose of the glider for measurement. Bomb drop was on your first pass North by the big tower. Bomb was a lunch bag with flower in it so you could see it if you got close, which very few did. Fourth was cross country. The glider was area towed up higher than a winch launch. Some would get away from the cliffs and get to Escondido and beyond.
