I began attending SCCA events in1966. My favorite car at the time were Bugeye Sprites. The small bore Abarth cars ran in the same class. It wasn't uncommon for 2 Double Bubble coupes and an Alemano to be running with the Spridgets. They made such wonderful noises and seemed so exotic and unobtainable to me. I always got as close as possible to them to see how they were built. Thanks so much Lou for sharing your cars with the world. I still feel that same excitement l felt in my late teens.

Lou . Chuck saw the same thing I did in the early 1960's when the cars in my area range from 1954 to 1963 . Those were cars that came from the Clay Model based on drawings. There were sculptors that shaved off the clay in stages until the their hands felt the exact curve and where the body line ended and the Fin started. The designers had to be experts at free hand sketches to show different angle of the car and know the engineering limits for size, weight ,trunk cargo and engine power from the side Streets to the Highways while fitting in the average garage. It wasn't until 1956 when the steel Companies figured out how to engineer the Sheet Metal coils so the section that are cut off could stretch in the stamping Die with a minimal Throw-away rate from a tear. This helped the Big -3 in Detroit shake free of the jelly bean look from the 1940's that carried over by limits to sheet metal stamping . In 1970 I watched a movie from 1963 where the main actor drove a 63 Thunderbird convertible which I had never seen before in my area . About 8 years later the used car price came down and I bought a 63 hardtop and saw the theme where the design for the rear lights and bumper was carried into the dash for gauges and Switches. Today's cars are designed inside a Computer where a 3D printer and CNC milling machine makes the panel moulds and uni-body section where the Human touch is gone while designers wait for others to create the final car to see what it looks like. The artists of old that designed those cars had worked with slabs of clay slapped onto a wooden skeleton where they shaved off all the excess that didn't look like the car in their head and on paper. Jacob Epstein , Auguste Rodin and Bernardo Falcone worked with granite and marble to see a beautiful object inside where they removed all of what trapped them and hid their beauty. Detroit became a modern Quarry for sculptors that traded their chisels and hammers for Pencils and Grid Paper while the Young Mother in the Grotto ( Rodin) was now a 1959 Cadillac or a 1957 Thunderbird trapped on Paper in a 2D image and then in a 3D pile of soft clay waiting to be freed. **** I had learned how to work with Sheet Metal and fabricate items to pound into shape . My guess for the Aluminium body cars or sections in limited production was not only to reduce the weight by easier to shape it and pound out a mistake or creases .

I owned a 1961 750 Allemano convertible. Bought it for $350 in 1970. I was raced at Waterford Hills by its previous owner. Unfortunately, I was only 17 at the time and didn't realize what I had and completely destroyed it. Sold it to someone in the Detroit area in 1975 along with a converted Fiat 600 to 850 Abarth. I'm glad that someone had more sense than I did when owning these gems. Good job Chuck!

Lou, Another fantastic, rare automobile brought back to life or to existence for some of us via you Lou!!!! The owner sure does have love in his eyes for his machine. I would love to know the curb weight and hp of these rare cars.....so I as to give the reader an idea of how fast these rare cars were. Maybe you could inquire about these stats on future car stories?
@loucostabile
@loucostabile 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you 1974PanteraL for the kind words which are appreciated :-) When the Care Taker has brochures of the car, or marketing ads from the time, I love to show them. When there are so few cars like this I'm not sure what info is out there. Usually "stats" can be picked up from a Car & Driver, or Consumer Reports, however when it's 1959, I'm not sure where to go but Google. Hope that helps, Lou

Very good taste! 22 Abarth!? That's nice... There is (or used to be) a very good collection of Abarths in San Marino with some 15/20 cars. Some of this cars raced in Portugal in the late fifties and early sixties with very good results. Would love to have one of these...(or any other original 50/60's Abarth)

You're pronouncing it Ab-arth as in cab. I have heard it commonly pronounced A-barth, as in Hay. Which is correct? Also, you can sort of tell it's aluminum bodied by the sound of the door closing and hoods. It has a bit different sound than steel. Boy, that twin cam sure makes a nic difference, all the difference. And, really like the "Roma" license plate. So, was this car made in Torino? Horse power? My guess would be Abarth placed the carbs in the middle for the same reason they routed the chain as they did.
