For me the 500s where always the smoothest and nippyist of all the triumph twins, every time I've ridden the bigger twins they have always felt like tractors in comparison

I agree. My first “big” bike after I passed my test in 1966 was a 1959 Speed Twin just like this one. I went on to have a number of twins - a bathtub Thunderbird with matching Watsonian sports sidecar, AJS Model 31 650, Enfield 700, BSA Shooting Star 500 (the best of the lot, in my opinion) and a 1966 Triumph Bonneville in near-new condition, having done only 2,200 miles in three years. I found that the larger the capacity and the higher the state of tune, the more unpleasant the engine. The Bonneville was the worst of the lot, and by 70mph, vibration was so bad, that it broke exhaust brackets and bulb filaments. My pal had a new 1969 Thruxton Bonneville, which wasn’t quite as bad, but they put me right off British four stroke parallel twins. The 1961?Shooting Star ran sweetly and handled and braked far better than the Speed Twin. I still have a 500cc British parallel twin, but it’s a two stroke.

People used to give those to me and i gave them away if it wasnt pre unit i wasnt interested.
