1959 Willys Engine Update With A Little Rant

I got the new 1959 Willys home and tore into the Engine.
I pulled the head off and inspected the cylinders and its not looking good.
I'm not giving up just yet, but I am trying to be realistic on my chances of getting the Engine operational without a total rebuild.
The truck is still amazing and it has a bright future with me on the Red Clay Traveler Channel!

My uncle Jim did a lot of buying and selling of the Willys Jeeps. His bread and butter was his 1956 Willys truck. I've heard all the stories about dealing with guys. I know you will come up with a L226 engine sooner than later, who wouldn't want such a awesome guy like your to have the engine you need to get your Willys back up and running!?

In a lot of cases you must awesome it's a core. The key word is can I hear it run? If not it's a core!

good luck in your search for a 226. I agree with you about the pricing of the rebuild kits, and the engine that the seller does not know if it is stuck or not priced out so high. a lot of Willys owner of trucks and wagons are doing frame swaps and junkin the original frame engine and drive train for 1000 bucks out here in California

I know, its sad to me to see so many trucks cut up and original drivetrains thrown away. I wish I could stock up on these engines people keep pulling. lol

Preach it brother preach it if you knew how many people I’ve had to deal with that 226 it will run i’ve had worse the Picture of the Willis wagon that i sent to you had the head and cam out of a 244 industrial engine with a two barrel with a homemade split manifold and straight pipe

When putting the head back on a non hardening sealant needs to be used as they go into the coolant passages

Very good advice! Sadly I won't be doing it on this engine because it is to far gone.

It's always a crap shoot when you buy a 70 year old engine, they simply weren't built to last that long. If you pull it apart and the head, crank and pistons are all good, then it might be worth sending the block to a machine shop to have it bored and polish the crank if needed. You can re-use the rest of the components and put all new bearings into it, and you end up with an essentially new motor. It's worth it if this is going to be your "keeper", you don't want to be up in the woods and have it quit on you.

I agree, sadly this engine is a lost cause. I checked it out more today and it appears the rear cylinder is very damaged. It feels like it could have a hole or a big chunk missing in the cylinder wall. It still has a lot of good parts but I'm searching for a good running engine now.

Is the super hurricane 226 a six cylinder? if so, there may be one for sale in RI, says turns freely, $995.

That's my brothers tank, he is partial to the Hodaka's and wouldn't let it go. lol
