Some notes on some players (via Pro Football Reference and Wikipedia): 5:42 L.G. Dupre got 16 rushing attempts in 1961, which was his last season in the league. So much for "many years to come." 19:25 Bob Lilly is probably the only one of those new players that was actually worth mentioning. Mr. Cowboy, never missed a start in 14 seasons, 7x All-Pro, Hall of Famer. 19:29 Dicky Moegel came in from the 49ers and played just one season for Dallas before a nagging foot injury essentially ended his career at 27. He was a Pro Bowler his rookie year. 19:32 Don Perkins was an almost perennial Pro Bowler in his career with the Cowboys throughout the 60s, averaging 4.1 yards per carry, but only about 14 attempts per game. He was an All-Pro in 1962. 19:35 Sonny Davis played all of two games his NFL career, suffering a knee injury against the Vikings that led to him being cut by the Cowboys during the 1962 offseason. He's also listed as a linebacker on both Wikipedia and Pro Football Reference. I think it's a bad sign for a team when almost every single time the Dallas defense is shown, it's them getting gashed down the middle by every running back. Also, the right side of the offensive line collapses almost immediately on the HIGHLIGHTS. I can only imagine how bad they were on plays that we don't see here. Oddly enough, the left guard, Duane Putnam (#61), was a 3x All-Pro in the 50s on the Rams, but he was in his 30s by this point. (Any future edits are for additional notes and/or time stamp fixes)

Dallas had no collegiate draft in 1960..strictly expansion draft provided, and released or traded for free agents, was their pool in a deep 12 team league that became 13 clubs that season. The AFL in its first season in 1960, did not strip away enough viable in its prime years talent to really have any effect at all on the NFL in that first DALLAS season. A player such as BILLY CANNON, was as much of a disappointment for HOUSTON as he was a success, with that excessive gambling debt addiction, and his many injuries, certainly marring his career. Even in 1960, his performance was uneven, spectacular and pedestrian. He was not even the best runningback on the team. That would be former CFL player CHARLIE TOLAR. GEO. BLANDA had never been consistently good in the NFL, either. He had always been an interceptions machine as well as a fine kicker and big playmaker, when he actually got to play QB for the CHIBEARS, which was infrequently. So, the NFL in 1960 was as strong as it had ever been, back then, even with the changing of the guard IN THE WEST from COLTS TO PACKERS.. PHILLY faded after VAN BROCKLIN'S RETIREMENT. CLEVE AND NY GIANTS were still the EAST'S BEST. Give Landry credit, he had the smarts to get a qb from WDC that could make plays whenever the originally called plays were coming apart = EDDIE LeBARON. Meanwhile, Don Meredith would end up being his more in the pocket, toned down LeBARON-esque playmaking qb who would be almost fully ready when the team was ready to take the next step later on, and one who was fully prepared when they actually did take that big step. MEREDITH LEARNED FROM LeBARON. Considering all things, DALLAS did ok in season one. Remember, when they played the NYGIANTS, that squad had been the EASTERN CHAMPS IN 1959..AND DAL. TIED THEM ON THE ROAD. And, no, I am not a modern DALLAS COWBOYS fan.. Their point differential was 177-369=-192, or an average of losing every game by a 16 point deficit..not great but considering 10 of the 13 NFL teams were one game under breakeven/.500 or better(yeah their records were inflated by expansion), and DAL. had no college draft, minus-16 is not a terrible showing.

@@forensicaccountant259, in the 1954 COTTON BOWL DICKIE M. was tackled on the sideline as he was open field running on his apparent way to a TD, BY ALABAMA'S TOMMY LEWIS who had been sitting on the TIDE BENCH when the RICE U. STAR MAEGLE was running free on the sideline. Lewis tackle stopped DM but just briefly, because instead of a five yard illegal participation penalty assessment from the foul's spot where MAEGLE was tackled, the official under the "palpably unfair act" rule awarded DM AND RICE U. a 95 yard TD. MAEGLE was tackled at the BAMA 38..LOL..but received SIX WHICH IF NOT FOR LEWIS, HE WOULD HAVE RECEIVED the old fashioned way. Yep, if LEWIS was counting on the 5 yard infraction walkoff, he counted wrong. Later on, MAEGLE ran for city councilman in HOU. AND WAS AN OILERS radio color commentator, and luxury hotel manager in Houston. LEWIS? Not much..CFL BUST, MINOR LEAGUE PRO COACH briefly, although, he and Maegle appeared together shortly after the bowlgame, on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW. By the way, MAEGLE originally spelled his name MOEGLE, but because folks mispronounced it with a long-O, he changed the spelling to match the original pronunciation= long-A..GERMAN in its derivation. MOEGLE IS spoken as 'MAY GUL'..

Fred Dugan was a starting SE (WR) on that 1960 team, catching his one and only touchdown against the Steelers in the opener. He was involved in a three-way trade between the Cowboys, Giants, and Redskins before the 1961 season and finished his career in Washington. Dallas received K Allen Green, who replaced Fred Cone. Cone was poor, even by 1960 standards, hitting just 46.2% (6/13) attempts. Green was even worse in 1961, making just 5 of 15 attempts (TE Dick Bielski also served as placekicker that year and made 6/9 attempts). The upside to the trade involving Dugan was that the Cowboys used a draft pick from the Giants in 1962 to take DE George Andrie.

Bobby was originally born in far-western central texas, but moved to FT. WORTH after his dad died of a heart attack at 36..Later as you know, his aunt and uncle who had become his guardians, moved to HIGHLAND PARK northeast of DALLAS, and along with DOAK WALKER, the rest is history. No wonder he buried his sorrow in alcoholism. His mom and two sisters left him with his aunt and uncle because his bio mother could not afford to raise three kids by herself; all of that piled upon a dad passing when LAYNE was an adolescent, forcing those separations.. Horrible deal for him..terrible..
