Huw Wheldon was intelligent and genuinly interested in Hellman's work. There were only 2 UK TV channels back in 1960 and the BBC didn't shy away from broadcasting intelligent conversations. Some people would watch the other channel or turn off the TV, but others would watch things they would never see now with so much choice.
