1960s dump truck sat for 15 YEARS! Will it Run?

Tinkering on old equipment is a fun pastime for me so when i heard about this dump truck I was all in! This 1960's era dump truck had been sitting for the last 15 years according to its owner. After some determination and turning of the wrenches we were able to bring this old girl back to life! Unfortunately with the truck having Air breaks and the belts being removed we could not test out the air brake system. In attempted to shift the transmission the top of the transmission broke and it was obvious it did not want to move. All in all it was a fun day of tinkering on this Big Block 401 V6 but the trucks too far gone for me to reason spending money on it. It's a 60 - 63. You can tell by the wrap around windshield. In 1964 they changed to a flatter windshield. It's a cool old truck. It's a shame that it's in such bad shape, body wise.

Yeah until i got to see it in person i was all about taking this truck home. But as you can tell from the video a closer inspection shows just how bad the elements have been to this truck. The truck would need a full new cab and fenders and buy the time you locate a decent one the rest of the truck would also be rotted out. All in all we had fun getting the engine to run again

Alot of these old dump trucks hauled salt to put on the roads that's why they were so rusty .

Its a shame the rock salt is so harsh on metal. It still probably held up better than the vehicles made in todays age

Just subscribed. there are bolts that to put in the air brake chambers and tighten them to manually release the brakes.

yeah I was bummed that the shifter and top of the transmission broke, but if they broke just by us trying to shift it into a gear when it was stationary it definitely would've broke under load going down the road

Neither of the mufflers were hooked up when we got there so the truck engine just had the y pipe on it. I assume that all the smoke form the marvel mystery oil just shot out the y pipe and found its way through the mufflers that laid on the ground.

My Buddies and I have been searching more more trucks to try and get running. The hope is that if we found one of similar body style and it had better sheet metal we could utilize all the good components for one truck like you mentioned.

@@GAVINCANFIELD some man bought an old truck that had a great drive train but was very badly rusted and he found the aluminum cab from an old peterbilt city truck tractor from the 1970s that was in the junkyard for $100 . He removed the badly rusted cab and made the aluminum one fit. He ended up with a unique looking truck that will never ever rust and lighter than steal. It’s a real eye catcher. His last project, he said he was 65 and tired but happy with the vehicle.

The owner said we can have it for free. With the engine running id be willing to sell that, keep the chrome, and probably scrap the rest unless i found someone who wanted to buy the whole truck the way it sits.

We used it in the cylinders we could get it into. Unfortunately, the back two spark plugs were rotted beyond being able to be removed.

We were in PA working on the truck but it originally was a state or township truck for Passaic County NJ

@@GAVINCANFIELD That engine is a 401 V6 magnum ! A good motor but not very powerful. My dad had that same motor in his 1967 GMC he purchased new from Frank's GMC in Lyndhurst NJ, Bergen County ! Had a double stick, 5 speed main with a 4 speed auxiliary transmission. A shame your gonna scrap the truck ! Yes, pull the motor, and collect the emblems.
