This time on Sally's Speed Shop we revive a 1970 GMC 2500 that's been sitting for about 5 years! Sandi Davis called us to help get "Old Blue" back on the road for her father, a 79 year old Navy Veteran, Jimmy who bought the truck brand new in 1970!

Had disk brakes on front , drum back , he put 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle 396 4barrel 1000 CFM Holley Carb with hand choke cable knob in dash, Turbo 400 3 speed Automatic transmission with 388 different axle ratio and blue color, black bench seat too also Am/ Fm radio update too and daul exhaust! Back in the early 90's I baught a 1968 GMC 8 lug wheels , it had the original 327 turbo 400 , I was a dishwasher at ponderosa and wasn't able to tittle it quickly , and the guy , who was a so called "friend" applied for a new tittle and sold it to someone else , needless to say that so called "friend" avoided me like the plague . 14:44 and 15:10 Speaking of saving money, Jacob, you ought to drain those oil-bottles better --- I have often found an ounce or more of undrained oil in an "empty" oil-bottle that had been discarded. Better for your wallet AND the environment. And it's really simple, too --- rather than letting your arm get tired and achy from holding the bottle upside down in the engine's oil-filler neck all that time, just insert the spout of a wide-mouth funnel into the neck, and then set the oil-bottle upside down into the mouth of the funnel to let it drain for ten minutes. :D

I would be changing those flexible brake lines at the wheels I could see the first one you worked on had a dark spot all the way around the hose right at the metal crimp fitting. Headed down the road one good press and pop there it goes oh no no breaks and without power brakes and all four drums that's definitely no more breaks at all. And most likely you're in break would be hard to pull in a hurry if it did much at all your best bet would be sticking that thing in low gear and hanging on.

I would've set him up with a cam, intake, headers and cherry bomb glasspacks if I could.. because stock sucks and a nice thumpy cam and glasspacks can't be beat... unless it was a Ford instead :P Sorry folks, Ford engines just sound better, proven fact. (they also make more power per cubic inch too) Learning from what I've seen Kevin on Junkyard Digs deal with numerous times, I think one of the first things you should do is pull the valve covers and hose down the valves in the penetrating oil of your choice so that it'll help free them up because so often they end up stuck and bending pushrods or just not allowing the engine to turn. Your dad's logic is seriously flawed.. How would the spark be going from the points to the coil wire if the cap isn't above the rotor? Look at all that cracking on the inside of the tires.. That tells you you always need to check both sides of the tires because the outside may look fine while there's giant cracks on the inside waiting to blow. I am absolutely AMAZED that that thing has a Dana 60 and not a 12 bolt. I wish I could've done that for Papa (my mom's dad) but all his old cars were long gone.. especially the 50 Ford that claimed half a lung when he put it into a black walnut tree outside of Stockton heading back from shore leave in the Navy. I definitely have to get one and take it up to his grave someday and leave it idling and see if he revs it up... especially now that both he an Meme (grandma) are gone.
@SallysSpeedShop
@SallysSpeedShop 3 жыл бұрын
We're planning to do some further upgrades in the future, but probably not so much in the performance area, but rather in drivability for him and his daughter. And yeah, with motors that haven't run in a really ling time that's never a bad idea! His logic is actually spot on, the points send a signal for the coil to discharge through the coil wire to the cap, which then travels down to the rotor and to whatever spark plug wire it's pointing at. So even without the cap on the coil wire will fire every time the points open and close. And yup, the tires were real sketchy, and I agree! I didn't expect the Dana 60 either! You should definitely get that thing going for sure!

@@SallysSpeedShop don't own one. There's a 51 for sale near me with airbags and decent paint for 6k but I don't have it. There was a 49 for sale with no engine or trans or interior for 1600 but I just don't have the money to build an engine and get a trans and everything to be able to get it on the road. Papa never kept any of his old cars unfortunately.. likely because Meme didn't want them around and just wanted a new car and that was it.
