I always love doing chainsaw restorations. This chainsaw (Model C. E) was made by the Strunk Manufacturing Co. in the 1960s. The chainsaw happens to be electric and has a massive 26 amp motor, which puts the saw at around 4HP. That is a LOT of power for an electric chainsaw. Strunk also made versions of these for the U.S. Army in the 1960s. I have not been able to find a photo of this saw anywhere on the internet.
This saw was very dirty, especially inside the motor, which is probably the reason why it did not run. I couldn't sandblast the paint off as it contained lead. I decided to go a little bit further with this restoration and add a polished handle and bucking spikes.
The chainsaw bar oil can was the most damaged and needed a lot of work to get back to original condition. The clutch being present on this saw probably signifies a small production run. The patent for the chainsaw chain is here: patents.google.com/patent/US2...
This was the first of the modern chainsaw tooth designs.
In this video I check that the electrical motor is functioning correctly and put the saw back together to get it running.

....and of course, the demonetization algorithm strikes again! I'm trying asbestos can, but apparently if I even mention asbestos in the video, it gets demonetized. I even posted it early to the patrons and it was fine. Bummer, since I started this one in April and it was a lot of work. This reminds me why the patrons are so important to this channel's continuation, especially as the projects get bigger. If you want to buy me a beer or just help out on Patreon I would massively appreciate it. www.patreon.com/handtoolrescue

I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle kzbin.infoUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

Concerning the decals used on your projects. You should adhere all decals before the clear-coat. This provides an extra layer of protection and helps keep the decal on much longer. Hope this helps. @randomguy93984
@randomguy93984 5 жыл бұрын
@@wreckandraceify if you strip out a flathead screw you have a bigger problem. I have personally never stripped one out. In fact a lot of the time you can grind a slot into a bolt and use one of those drivers that turn when you hit it with a hammer and back out the bolts with a flathead. Or "standard" as the upright woodworkers call it. You are right on the stabbing but I would still much rather have a screwdriver slip off a few times than have to spend 2 hours with an easy out bashing my skull in.

@theghostofthomasjenkins9643 3 жыл бұрын
@@randomguy93984 you can grind a slot into any bolt head, though, be it phillips, allen, star, or whatever if it strips. and yes, i've seen many flatheads stripped out. they aren't any easier than the alternative. they are just more of a pain when they work as designed than the others.

You breathe much more asbestos walking around the streets of any major city from all the brake dust still floating around. You would be amazed how much is still floating around. It was only a big problem for people who worked around it on a daily basis and were breathing a lot of it. With all they hype about it, it's difficult to convince people of that though.
@jonanderson5137

True, but they also dont spread around friable fibers nearly as much as old brakes and clutches did.
@Pancreaticdefect
@Pancreaticdefect 6 жыл бұрын
Yep. Asbestos was used heavily for a very long time in thousands of products from insulation to the mortar between bricks as it is pretty much a super-powered material that is fireproof, insulating, and adds tremendous strength to anything its added to. And as long as you're not taking a jackhammer to any of those products, its perfectly safe. Any time I hear people worry about asbestos in old building I simply tell them not to go in and snort any plaster dust they find and they'll be fine. Asbestos brake pad material is definitely a problem since it is, by its very nature, designed to get ground into a fine powder that is easily stirred up and scattered by the air.
@Bender13
@Bender13 5 жыл бұрын
I remember all the times I did my own brake jobs back in the 60’s...as did a lot of shade tree mechanics then.....no mask, just blow out the dust in the drums or wipe them out. We never worried about what we could be breathing back then. Asbestos was once called a miracle product as it was used in everything. Back in the days of old theatres, people would be given an asbestos handkerchief as they entered the theatre. On their way out, they would drop the soiled handkerchiefs into a drum at the exit. The drum was emptied into a furnace and the cloth was burned and....good as new.

Labeling and video are great for remembering where things go. Additionally, most electric or gas motors are built the same as most other electric or gas motors. Windings, bearings, carburetors, spark plugs, etc for each respectively. I can't speak for anyone else, although I'm sure other people are the same, but when reassembling something, I find a lot of part locations/assembly orders just fall into place naturally in my mind. Doesn't mean I always get it right the first time, but it does help.

Huh. Riddle me this, Batman. Why would an electric chainsaw need a clutch?

I was wondering the same thing. Gas saws you dont want the blade moving at idle. I thought all electric saws were direct drive

Could be a safety issue. Chain snags or there's kickback, you want that chain to stop moving.

JonahGrumby thats a good point. If the chain gets bound that motor coasts for a while. Thx

Puzzled me too. But if you only make so many and are basing most of its design after its gasoline counterpart then keeping the design as similar as possible cuts down costs. My assumption anyway. Honestly, I’ve never used an electric chainsaw. This is the first I’ve ever seen one apart!!😂

Хорошо что он в этом видео не пробовал смазку на вкус , или еще чего. Ненавижу когда он так придуривается на видео . (До сих пор воротит с видео про швейную машинку где он "кушал" отработанную смазку (нутелу на самом деле )

I love you, Hand Tool Rescue guy. This restoration took me back to being a little girl and watching my dad cut wood with his chainsaw. It wasn't an electric saw he used but I bet the greasy sawdust smell was similar. Anyway, I found your channel a few weeks ago because the spark plug cleaner was recommended to me. I then subscribed and binge watched everything. I was so happy to see the new videos pop up. Please keep doing what you do with the skills and sense of humor you have. I love it!

Maximum Tape because handle is aluminium but you dont use heatshrink tubes? The tapes will unwrap eventually... I hope you like electricity.

Murlockingqc heatshrink on the ring terminals? It's on all the other connections.
@Murlockingqc
@Murlockingqc 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the ring terminals. If you look at the other connection with the blue at 10:19, that's how I would have used the heatshrink tube. And the solder joint should be concave for proper soldering, but since it's clamped down it should be fine. It's probably going to be safe but everything I wrap in electric tape usually end-up unwrapping.

The saw is grounded. If the hot touches the metal handle, the breaker will trip.

Oh, neat! But wouldn't you get shocked anyway ? Or the current travel through the ground first ?
@Dr_V

Easy way to prevent tape unwrapping is to apply a small zip-tie over it. Shrink wrap looks better but it's kinda thin, on a high current wire multiple layers of tape make better insulation. I learned this the hard way on an old Soviet vacuum cleaner, took a nasty shock from that mfkr...
