my dad sold those units back in the late 1940's, ammonia was the refrigerant used. what killed that company is they transitioned from gas to an electric heater, and caused the owners electric bill to more than double the kwh usage. so what was sold/ delivered, was taken back out one month later, and the company faded into the sunset.

In Romania they where made with an electric heating, gas not beeing the norm. They dind't eat so much electricity (trough for the same amount of space, they where less efficent compared to the compressor ones), but they needed to work more to keep the cool, so higher electricity compustion. Some where fiited with compresor into the '80's, in order to reduce the power compustion - you know, Ceauşescu. They started with making absobrtions one because they where cheaper and more easely to be manufactured. Around 1968-1969 they strated to make compressor ones and the compressor ones becamed the main ones. Of course, there import fridges before that, mainly from U.S.S.R.

After the disovery of nuclear fission, I rate the spread of affordable air conditioning as the most significant technological development of the second half of the 20th century. Without effective, reliable air conditioning the population boom of the Southwest never could have happened. Las Vegas and Phoenix wouldn't exist except as the tiny, nameless desert towns they used to be; Atlanta and Houston (maybe all of Texas) never would have had the growth they did, and even Southern California might still be just orchards and sleepy little ranching pueblos. Hard to imagine Hollywood without air conditioning. And the city of Dubai wouldn't exist at all. Air conditioning allowed large concentrations of people to live in places that were just too climactically inhospitable without it for the majority humans. We take it for granted now, but the world and its economy would be much different without good A/C.

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZbin users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.

They are are called "Electrolux-Servel" absorption refrigerators and work on an ammonia-water mixture. They have no moving parts. They are usually fired by natural gas or kerosene. The Amish have kerosene powered refrigerators. Campers often have a small absorption refrigerator that runs on a small propane flame. Their coefficient of performance is lower than vapor compression refrigeration (1.6 for absorption vs 2.8 to 5 for mechanical refrigeration). But the lower cost of fuel compared to electricity makes them come out pretty much equal in terms of cost.

I remember the old "PANCAKE" style tecumseh compressors, they were very quiet and reliable, now they are just a memory, like everything else they lasted too long, and was discontinued.. now rotary compressors are used and they just make warranty when they die..in the market today everything is not repairable, you buy it, use it , and when it dies you throw it out and go buy a new one, repair is a thing of the past.

It "removes heat" just as a lamp "generates darkness" when you turn it off, Why do they over complicate it? It's just a balance of temperature, it is obvious that the air is going out one way or another if you pump new one.
@sivalley Жыл бұрын
There is no such thing as "cold". There is the perception of something having less heat. This is in the same vein as a lamp generates light but the ABSENCE of light is "dark". Neither cold nor dark are created by any machine. They are the labels we give for the absence of heat and light. To explain why physics does not use cold and dark think about this; when you're driving does your car produce "empty" that somehow finds it's way into the fuel tank? Obviously not, so why would you say a device produces the inverse of its operation? Everything consumes energy to move heat from one place to another more favorable location.
