@OofusTwillip The first job I ever had in 1974.....they had an old mechanical register like this but smaller. Everything had to be done manually, figure out the tax (usually you had a state tax chart taped to the register). At the end of the night my boss spent hours tallying the separate departments and balancing the drawer. Now it's done in seconds

no joke.....the store I worked at for many years had its cash register (1980s) shorted out and died. The reason why? A cock roach walked between two points on a circuit board and bridged two terminals.....fried the circuit board.....and the roach
