Vintique Motors is thrilled to present this aluminum bodied 1962 Bentley S2 Continental Flying Spur with coachwork by HJ Mulliner!
Rolls-Royce had envisaged the Bentley Continental as exclusively a two-door car, but late in 1957 the decision was taken to sanction the production of a four-door variation by H J Mulliner. Introduced on the S1 Continental and known as the 'Flying Spur', this design was a collaborative effort by Rolls-Royce's in-house styling department and H J Mulliner and bore a strong resemblance both to the two-door Continental and to existing coach built four-door styles on Rolls-Royce and Bentley chassis'. To the Continental's existing qualities of pace and elegance, the Flying Spur added four-door practicality, a more spacious interior, and generously proportioned boot. The Flying Spur body style continued the V8-engined S2 Continental and was revised to incorporate the S3's four-headlamp front end following the latter's introduction in 1962.
This '62 S2 is one of the final S2s built and clothed in design no. 7508's 4-door and 6-light 'Flying Spur' bodywork, BC91CZ was ordered new by John A. Day, Esq, the High Sheriff of Devon in 1961, and delivered on March 29th, 1962, via Jack Barclay's dealership. It remained Mr. Day until passing to its second owner in 1973 and it would remain with the second owner for 40 years until being sold to its third owner via Bonham's at their Greenwich, CT sale in June of 2013. It would remain with the third owner until being acquired by its fourth owner from Virginia in March of 2016 and we are offering on behalf of the fourth owner.
This S2 is 1 of only 71 right-hand driver Bentley S2s of the 114 built with coach built Flying Spur design 7508. It was originally ordered in Caribbean Blue with Off White upholstery; it was repainted Maroon in the late 1970's or early 1980's under the second owner's discretion. It was optioned from the factory with power windows, power radio, 3-point seat belts color-dyed to match the seats, an inflatable lumbar support to be fitted in the driver seat. Later, a Webasto sunroof was added.
Rolls-Royce Enthusiast Club possesses a number of records for this S2 including the original sales order from March 15th, 1962, purchase agreement between John A. Day and Jack Barclay Limited, several build sheet documents, notes from the day it was road tested after being built, and transfer of ownership documentation from John A. Day sold it to MC Motors on April 16th, 1973. Under current ownership more than $28,000 has been spent on documented servicing and refurbishment and can be enjoyed in its current state or taken to the next level as a deserving full restoration candidate.
