My dad, who passed away in 2010, was at this game. He told me many times about being at the game where Musial hit his last home run.

I remember this so clearly even still today so many years later when I was only 9 years old listening to the game in STL on a transistor radio. The Cards were as hot as can be winning 19 out of 20 going in to this showdown with the first place Dodgers in STL. I remember crying in excitement with Harry Caray going crazy as it took Stan the Man to finally hit it out against Koufax to tie the game. Interesting is that the Cards came up short at 93-69 in 1963 yet were the same 93-69 in 1964 with Brock when they beat the Yankees in the world series. Broglio remembered for the Brock trade was the ace on the Cards in the early 1960s. A Dick Nen home run in a game a few nights later put the nail in to the Cards season a few nights later. They almost won it all in Stan's last year.

The 63 Cardinals are one of the few teams to have three players with 200 hits the same season: Bill White (200), Dick Groat (201), and Curt Flood (200).

Any chance you have the July 14, 1964, meetup of these teams in St. Louis? Searching for personal reasons - my father was paged mid-game because his mother had died. He was actually listening to the game on the radio and was able to hear part of the page. We've been searching for a recording for years now. Thank you!

Correction to the comment below. It was Podres pitching like he was Sandy Koufax against the Cards.

The Cardinals came into this game Red Hot, winning 19 of their last 20 including a current 10 game winning streak

That put them just one game behind the first-place Dodgers, who were "only" 14-7 during that streak. However, the Dodgers swept this series and went on to win the pennant. They then swept the Yankees four straight in the World Series.

Harry Caray was actually a good announcer in his younger days. I always thought he was a drunken buffoon in Chicago.

One reason for the national interest was that 1963 was going to be Stan Musial's final season. Many fans were hoping the Cardinals would win the pennant, giving Stan the Man an opportunity to play in one last World Series.

Ernie Broglio started this game for the Cardinals. He pitched well, although the Dodgers won. The following season, Broglio was famously traded to the Cubs for Lou Brock. The deal actually made sense for both teams at the time. The Cubs needed pitching (and Broglio had been a fine pitcher in St. Louis) while the Cardinals were willing to develop Brock's potential. Unfortunately, Broglio's career was soon over due to physical problems. If today's sports medicine had existed back then, the trade might not have seemed so one-sided (although the Cardinals would not have regretted acquiring Brock even if Broglio had multiple 20-win seasons in Chicago).
@seangoodwin3046 Жыл бұрын
Broglio's arm was toast before the deal was made. They were shooting him up and never told the Cubs. A big reason why you have physicals before all trades is this deal. Cubs got a bad rap for something that was not really their fault.

1:30:05 Harry Caray calls Stan Musial's home run (number 475, the final one of Stan's career). It tied the game in the 7th inning and gave the Cardinals a chance. Jack Buck remarked about what a performance Stan had been putting on down the stretch in his final season.
