Sutherland is so unique in the history of singing. As a singer it is fascinating to watch her. it's like she is playing an instrument, the inside of her face, that she is manipulating using the outside of her face. Every position of the mouth is in the service of the sound, her eyebrows are like picks on guitar strings as she brings them up and down depending on the pitch. The lift of the soft palate and how she breaks into what looks like a big smile on her highest notes to give her room for the huge sound on the Eb. It's technique beyond what anybody has ever attempted and she relied on it and trusted it completely. Then you can ignore all that and just listen at what that creates. Sometimes technique creates the art.

@@draganvidic2039 I have to say: I ADORE Sutherland and usually the supposed diction problems so many people spout are exaggerated complaints. In this instance her diction is TERRIBLE BEYOND BELIEF. Haha 😆 It is still fucking glorious!! Personally, I’ll take glorious sound with shit diction over whatever the hell opera “Stars” have now any day of the week!

@@draganvidic2039 Dragon Vidic, are truly fluent in all the languages that Sutherland sang in? If she was eminently communicative and every constanant was clear, would you be able understand and follow? Or is this just an opportunity for you to post a petty comment without any concrete knowledge? Every singer has flaws and unfortunately this was hers and it was inherent in how she learned to sing. Her statement that the composer wrote the emotion into the score for the singer to interpret was not wrong. She was NOT overrated and she worked on improving her diction as the years went by. Politely, go s**ew yourself or have someone do it for you. 😮
