My first car was a 1964 Comet and I still own it today. I've got to set you straight about 1964 Mercury Comet engine codes. The "K" code does not represent a Ford "K" code. The only true 271 hp K codes were installed in the seven Durability Comets that ran around Daytona for 100,000 miles and those cars all started out a "F" code cars and had the 271 hp 289 installed with a 9: rear axle. The Mercury "K" code was rated at a conservative 210 hp and used a 600 cfm Autolites that were used on the 351 big block of the early 60's. you could get a K code in any Comet and these are the same engines as used in the Cyclones which came out in Jan 1964. I have a Comet Caliente 4 dr with the 289 K code built on October 6, 1963 with an 8" rear and 3.25 gears. I'm guessing your Caliente was a "F" code 260 V8 2bbl? If you post the VIN, I'll decode it for you. The floors in your car appear original and your right that makes this car a treasure. Smart move adding the frame connectors - these Comets do flex quite a bit. I'm guessing your going to install a 9" rear? Looks like a great project and I look forward to your next post.😀

Hey Kevin. Thanks for the info. I believe the hi perf 289 in the 64 was the A code? I have a K code in my Comet, 4 bbl 210 hp according to my VIN. I found out after I posted that I got the Cyclone engine name wrong as well. Unfortunately, the drivers door was gone, and the data plate as well, when I got the car. So I have no info as to what the car had as delivered, other than the VIN stamping on both fender wells. I will be swapping in another 8” (3.23 trac lok) because that’s what I had available. I think it should handle the 300 HP 289 I’m building for it with a top loader I have sitting around. Interestingly, this car has a history of ownership that may sound familiar to you. You’ll have to wait for an upcoming episode on that 😜

Thank you for watching. Putting together an engine video for the Comet, but I’m also about to drop a Mustang video sometime today if all goes well. Cheers!

The A/FX cars were not Cyclones, there were 20 Caliente’s and one station wagon. The Cyclone was a mid year model. Also the Comet was not available with the 271/289 only the African safari and durability comets had that engine.

Thanks. Many others have mentioned the mistakes I made in this first video. Not having the knowledge of this models history, I had to rely on info from the internet, and that unfortunately led to my mistakes. Thank you for setting the record straight. Cheers!

Is this also gonna be a track car? What kind of exhaust will it have?
@trackdayclassics8 ай бұрын
Great question. I’m hoping to make it a street legal track day car. And I’m thinking of building a 180 exhaust, not an 8 into 1. What do you think? Is this something people would like to see?
@Giuliana-w1f8 ай бұрын
@@trackdayclassics i'd personally like to see the difference (if any) between the sound of the 180° headers vs 8 to 1 (even if the engines are different). This is such an underrated channel, i hope to see it grow over time
