Rust may compromise the grounding connection to the coil but rust, even very heavy, probably has little or no effect on the magnetic field generated between the flywheel magnets and the coil. Good job resetting the points gap. Not so good getting gas into the carb via the air filter - but it did work. Grown men can sound really funny when talking to their dog.
