it's amazing how much less publicity slalom gets these days, especially considering the rapid expansion of the media and the vast progression of the sport. I would love one day to see slalom return to the limelight (along with all other forms of skating, not just street) and to play a role in making that happen.

This was taped for broadcast on "Wide World Of Sports", but I believe this was not only the first time the show covered skateboarding, but the last time until the late 1970's.

there really is just sort of a dip in skating from the late 60s to late 70s that I'm only coming to understand now

Awesome! I was just reading about this in a book about the Beach Boys. The early days of the sport. So Cal must have been a blast back then--surfing, skateboarding, drag racing, and rock & roll.

masonite, rough side up! Secret handshake not included. Gimme powder-tar anyday. Love this video. I had no idea slalom was pre 70's.

Signal Hill, in Long Beach, CA, was the ultimate downhill back in the groovy 60's. Would do it wearing very little protection - if any!

I recall one of of the 1960's or 1970's championships covered by ABC where one of the contestants did really fast endovers, but I haven't been able to find it on youtube.

I was in the Anaheim Championships in the twelve and under and placed fourth in my class. I saw ABC sports viewed coverage of the contest. I would like to find a copy of the footage. How did you acquire this footage. I was on Palisades Skateboard Team

Must have been clay wheels?
@danmoreno377 жыл бұрын
As someone who owned a skateboard with "clay wheels" (I was born in "56 and I got my 1st board in '63) The wheels were actually hard rubber. The looked like clay, thats why everyone called them clay wheels.

@@danmoreno37Do you have any actual evidence? Most sources claim " clay composite - a combination of plastic, paper, and finely ground walnut shells."

@@danmoreno37What kind of knowledge does a seven to nine year old in 1962 have about materials science? Extremely little. This is a rhetorical question.
