Get the firewall Master cylinder firewall support plate from open tracker, Mustangs have a very thin Firewall that flexes a lot when the brakes are used hard. The plate strengthens the Brake Master cylinder mount area

On the rear brakes you have to insert a small rod to push the automatic adjuster away from the adjustment wheel, so you can rotate the wheel to loosen the rear brake shoes

Enjoying the content. My first car was a 1964 1/2 mustang loved it learned a lot. Van your doing a great job being careful casual and cleaning as you go. If you sell the car keep me in mind

5:30, brake cleaner caused the paint to strip off from those springs when I did the back brakes in one of my older vehicles, and flecks of paint / coating were all over the place. Why not just convert the rear brakes to disc ?
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds 7 ай бұрын
That's a great question. When looking to convert to disc, I spoke to John at OpenTracker racing about doing disc brakes in the rear as well, he told me it was really unnecessary unless you're racing it or looking to go the super performance route with it. They don't really make that much of a difference in normal scenarios b/c most of the stopping power comes from the front brakes anyways. The disc+drum setup is more than sufficient for everyday purposes.
@TheSchmed
@TheSchmed 7 ай бұрын
@@VanHoutenBuilds yep, figured there was a good reason, I believe something like 65% stopping power is front brakes, I just thought maybe the expense you were putting towards the rear drums may have been almost what it would cost for a disc conversion.
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds 7 ай бұрын
@@TheSchmed The rear drum, shoes, and wheel cylinders were all pretty cheap compared to putting back discs on. The calipers and pads would have actually cost a bunch more for the back as well.

@@VanHoutenBuilds yep, understood, I wish I had your skill and talent to take on such a project, my 2010 and 2016 Jeep Wranglers keep me busy (Brakes, steering linkage, shocks, oil filter housing, steering damper, EGR valve,etc.) always something 😉. At least with 60s and 70s classics no dreaded CE light to put you in the chase. I’d rather tune a carb, and “wire” jets (mostly motor cycles in the mid-late 80s) than replace a Control module.

Your car is coming along nicely!!! You continue to amaze me with the ease of your work. You make it seem so easy… When I did my work I had the directions out, would have tools just out of reach and language to make a sailor blush. Great job again!!

I love your mustang project My stepdad had a 1965 V6 200 automatic was factory air condition car and of course it got rear-ended and was totaled matching numbers I can't wait to see the next video My dream car is a 65 mustang as well but did you know that the 1966 mustang was the first mustang to have a hazard warning switch light and would have been placed in the glove box thank you for all that you're doing and your family

Great videos on this classic car, I like watching the parts so I wait for it to be all done. I would like to ask about paint job of car I know you will do it I wondered if it will be dark green ,I remember in 60s it was kool in dark green LOL. I also wondered about your next project since this car is a gem after your done , I would add that maybe a updated system in it like gps or video rear cam or stereo system something like that ?

I'm going with a dark blue metallic with white racing stripes. I'm also planning on eventually putting in a screen with backup camera too! I'm going to look at a possible new project this weekend!

Open tracker didn't sell you on their poterfield racing shoes for the rear brakes? I got those as well with the Kelsey Hanes slotted disc brakes...but then again my mustang is all raced out.
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds Жыл бұрын
No, John over at Open Tracker didn't actually try to sell me on anything. That's what I liked about their company! He just told me all about the performance upgrades and what he would recommend whether I bought parts from him or not.

@@VanHoutenBuilds I didn't mean it like that. I love open tracker too. I meant he didn't recommend their brake shoes? Their brake shoes work great on mine. I have all their stuff on my mustang. There awesome! And good choice on the 4.5 leafs did you get mid eye or reverse eye?
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds Жыл бұрын
@@seanjohnson6899 No he didn't recommend their brake shoes, I think b/c when I ordered them I didn't know the shape the rear shoes were in. They were only like $20 of Amazon for what seems like decent quality. What is the difference between the reverse-eye and mid-eye leafs? Would you recommend one vs the other? Thanks!

With regard to the impromptu singing, please don’t quit your day job. Mustang is too fun. How much was the car at purchase, because you are sure putting cubic dollars back into it.
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds Жыл бұрын
Haha. What can I say, I love to sing. I got the car for $5,900. I've only put in around $4K so far and don't see myself having to go over $5K total. It will be worth more than I put into it after all is said and done. Worth more to me than that though since this has always been my dream car!

I'm impressed with everything you do and your mechanical skills, but I'm surprised you don't fit brake boosters
@HunterVanHouten
@HunterVanHouten 4 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Reason I didn't put a brake booster on is that I wanted to feel the brakes a bit better and also not steal vacuum from the engine. If I don't like it, I'll end up changing it.
