Great job from your subscriber with the 52 years of 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback ownership… I remember having trouble finding U joints when they were first replaced. Mine were considerably larger than what the parts books called for. Ford told me that they had made some modifications to some of the early cars. My Fastback was built in the first month of Fastback production. They could get the correct parts.? It turned out my best friend’s dad was the General Manager of a Ford Assembly plant in Mahwah New Jersey and was able to get me special help. I noticed you had zerk fittings on the U joints… great call! I like your painting on the go style… Those polyurethane bushings are great as well. I recently had mine replaced but I used PVDF. It’s a little more chemically resistant than polyurethane. The machine shop I work at made them for me. Your skills with your car are very impressive and I enjoy how casual you are about it. Most professional mechanics would be blown away by your skill level!!! Keep up the great work and I’m looking forward to seeing your progress!!

@@VanHoutenBuilds You can find factory Ford assembly manuals with illustrations and diagrams online in book, CD, or USB form. I prefer the book versions, and you can find new reprints. There are also service and electrical manuals. And yes, definitely get both a Haynes and Chilton manual.

A set of cheap calipers to measure your u joints would save you time and money. FYI, the sway bar bushings need to be tightened at ride height.

Yeah I use calipers religiously, also used them on the u-joints, but unfortunately Summit didn't have their exact dimensions listed. This is great to know, I'll definitely do that once I drop everything back down. Thanks!

I buy from Summit all the time. Probably spend $3K - $5k with them every year and have always had great customer service and guidance from them. One thing you may have with a nearly 60 year old car is a swapped driveshaft. Always remove your U joints and measure them before you order them. You'll know exactly what you need. Excellent videos on this Mustang. I'll have to go back and check out some of your guitar videos. I've rebuilt a few upright bass fiddles in my day.

It's fun to watch your progress with the '65. Good work! CSRP is Custom Services Restoration Parts; I almost went with them but in the end I decided to go with the Willwood Classic Series disc brake kit instead. It's awesome you found a local parts house that knew exactly what you needed on the u-joints. It's hard to get something like that over the internet without physically matching them up like you did. I totally agree with you about John at Open Tracker Racing. He is awesome and super helpful with all the knowledge he has to offer. His pricing is competitive and his shipping charges are fair. Plus they process and ship orders quickly. Next time I'm down his way I want drop in and meet him in person. Anyway good luck with the master. I chickened out and had a mechanic do that for me with the proportioning valve for the back brakes.

I am restoring a 65 mustang convertible also, the good thing is I have a Summit Racing store just 10 miles away (Akron Ohio) and they have been great but I do take the old parts with me. bought the conversion kit from drum to disk on eBay worked great.

Just finished the job you are thinking of doing. It is a very good idea to change the shocks, spring coils, upper and lower controller arms, oh don't forget to change the spring perches, after all removing the front coils is not something you do everyday. Lastly, once you pull out the suspension coils it is always a good idea to clean behind that area. I cleaned up the area and used POR15 to really do it right. Good video.

Completely frustrating. I went through the same situation with Summit on the U Joints. I ended up taking the drive shaft to a local differential shop and they got me the right U-joints. I ended up returning the U -Joints to Summit. Also I was just at National Parts Depot in Ventura on Friday picking up some sheet metal parts for my 66 Fastback. In there display case they had several assembly manuals. I always buy assembly manuals for each year. The manual are from Jim Osborn and just copies of the factory ford blue prints. They have separate, body, suspension, interior, engine. Take your pick. John is great at Open Tracker.

Lessoned learned. Summit racing is only good for performance parts/upgrades. Vehicle spec parts use cj pony parts and Larry's thunderbird and mustangs in Corona. For both my 66mustang and 65 thunderbird landau that's all I use. Use to have mustangs plus out of Stockton,CA but they changed or sold out im not sure which.

Love the channel, new subscriber. That copper washer is VERY important. You’ll be leaking brake fluid badly if you don’t use them. Also, I’m surprised your experience with Summit was bad. I’ve ordered thousands of dollars worth of parts throughout the years from them and have never had a problem. Jeg’s is great, too. Not sure what you’re going to do with the hard brake lines, but it would’ve been a good idea to flush the fluid completely out of there in order to not contaminate the new calipers. I’d replace all the hard brake lines if I were you. You can get a complete pre-bent kit, or if you want to really feel good about yourself, buy some NiCopp lines, a good flare tool, and make them yourself. Advance Auto sells sections with the nuts, or you can buy a roll of NiCopp and the tube nuts . Very satisfying. NiCopp is very easy to work with. Make sure you bench bleed the master cylinder BEFORE you install it-you’ll be glad you did.

I’ll definitely take the new lines off to add the copper crush washers and then flush the lines! Depending on what comes out of them, I may just replace them. Did the braided brake lines just hook up to the stock brake lines?

Always measure the cup size for U joints.

Remove the poly bushings for the sway bar. They will squeak and they will tear up other parts of the suspension. Replace them with the Delron bushings . Also make sure you check the bearings with your brake kit. A lot of times the companies to save money will use bearings made in China. Those bearings are garbage, Replace them with Timken wheel bearings

Total with shipping was $832. Shipping was expensive bc the parts are so heavy. Most expensive part on the car so far, but a super important one the I knew I wanted to do before I even got the car.

It’s the plate that keeps pressure on the brake pads to hold them in place.

It's the 120 Grit Nylon Wheel from Harbor Freight! I highly recommend it.

do you have more brakepedal travel before brakes engages vs the drum setup?

Not from what I can tell. I haven't bedded them in yet, so we'll see. I made sure to bleed them real good to stiffen up the pedal as much as possible. I'll most likely have to make adjustments once I actually get it on the road though. With the new disk pads and drum shoes I set them up where there is slight drag on them when the wheel is spinning so just a light press of the pedal engages the brakes.

Yes I also have adjusted my rear drum brakes to dragging the drums. Can't go tighter. But the 4 piston calibers uses alot more fluid vs 2 drum wheelcilinders and so I think that is why the padel travels more

I missed it in one of your earlier videos but what is the name/brand if the red sanding discs you are using? My winter project is a 65 fastback and I'll have a lot of similar rust removal as yourself. From your videos it looks like those discs make it a breeze.

They are the Nylon Abrasive Wheels at Harbor Freight. I use the 120 grit. They also have an 80 grit, but I haven't tried that one yet.

Are you close by a California Mustang - they have several locations in C.A. but that was 2-3 decades ago. specific mustang parts retailers are better for asking questions like your universal joints. Summit Racing has too many variables on different makes - not saying they no good but if the wrong person without specific mustang knowledge might give wrong parts recommendations.
