I just wanna say that you really inspired me to buy my dream car (1968 mustang). I’ve always wanted to buy a fixer upper and build it myself. A little intimidated by the work required cause it’s not my expertise but it’s being delivered today so wish me luck!…might do a KZbin build series too

That's so awesome! I'm really glad to hear. You should totally do a YT build series on it, I'll definitely follow along. Thanks for following along and feel free to reach out if you have any build questions!

There are a lot of misconceptions about PCV valves…for a street driven vehicle, they’re so important. BTW: Look into the M/E Wagner PCV valve. You definitely want to run a PCV system to keep your crankcase clean and prevent oil leaks from the pressure build up. The PCV system is a working loop with the breather cap venting to the air cleaner. If your engine is stock then a stock PCV is fine. But if you run a decent cam, then the M/E Wagner adjustable PCV is the ticket.
@Deucealive75
@Deucealive75 Жыл бұрын
You may want to research the original setup for crankcase ventilation on the 65. I don't recall what the stock setup was. On my 66 289 I used caps on both rocker covers that just vent to the open air and didn't have any oil coming out. On my Dads 289 he used a PCV valve on the passenger side cover and may have had it hooked to engine vacuum. His car was sold so can't check the exact setup. Neither of us used stock rocker covers. I think it was around that time (65-66) when they started using PCV valves in cars.

Thanks, this is a 302 not original to the car. I think the best bet may be an extra line with a catch can and filter?
@markwilliford7471
@markwilliford7471 10 ай бұрын
@@VanHoutenBuilds I've had a couple of different set-ups. To make what you have work properly, you need a vent tube (literally a pipe that bends down to the bottom of the motor and vents to open air) OR a PCV back to the manifold or a carb spacer plate. Either of these installs on the passenger side to complement your vented breather on the driver's side. I found the PCV set-up to be cleaner-running for sure - much less odor in the car at idle - and it is more environmentally friendly if that is a factor for you. I detected no difference in performance.

@VanHoutenBuilds 10 ай бұрын
@@markwilliford7471 I have the carb spacer plate with the new pcv valve running to it from the valve cover. Seems to be working properly. Just getting a lot of condensation from the other side breather. I think I may add a new cap with an oil catch can.

Hi it looks great.. I am doing the same install and I found the mufflers to be a really loose fit and sliding around on the intermediate pipes. I was wondering how yours were before clamps?
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds 8 ай бұрын
Hey! Yeah mine are the same. I basically clamped everything down so much that it bent the piping and crimped them in place. I also got different clamps, b/c the ones that came with the kit almost seemed too small to fit around the pipes. Also I probably should have cut down the passenger side pipe that goes into the muffler b/c it went so far into the muffler until it hit the muffler wall bend. Now it's crimped so tight I can't get the pipe back out of the muffler. Oh well haha. I may have to end up welding them a bit. I would recommend these clamps for certain spots: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078TXNCP6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

@@VanHoutenBuilds Thanks for getting back to me I was worried they had sent me the wrong size mufflers. Good advice on the different clamps. My exhaust pipes over the axles are too tight around gas tank so I guess I will be cutting. Thanks again for the response.

@VanHoutenBuilds did you have to modify the break lines to install the dual exhaust? Or did have dual exhaust already before? It looks like this kit just worked around it. I have a 64.5 project that I am working on and mirroring a lot of your projects.

Sounds awesome and i want to do the exact same set up. Can i ask, how come you didnt do headers when you were working on the manifolds? Thanks for the video.
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I was thinking about doing headers but after a ton of research I couldn't find any headers that didn't take modifying. Didn't seem like there were any that you can just bolt up w/o denting in or bending. Seemed more affordable to keep the manifolds that I had since they were in ok shape. If I get a wild hair down the road I'll throw some headers on. Let me know if you are able to find headers that don't take any modification to install!

@@VanHoutenBuilds no mods at all to them. Honestly, I bought them so many years ago, I don’t remember where. I can say, they were just cheap headers that I sprayed high temp paint myself. (Young family = little spare money) Most likely purchased through one of the bigger supply houses. (Could be mustangs unlimited, although I think they are gone now)

I'm trying to do the same install, how much wielding is required? How hard was it to go over the axial ?
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds 8 ай бұрын
I didn't do any welding. Just used exhaust clips! I may go back and weld a few points where I had too much pipe and pinched the metal with the clips and now can't get them out but might be losing air flow. It was fairly easy to get over the axel b/c they are all separate piece that you just connect and twit where you want them to go. You just have to make sure that you have the mount points and if not, then you need to add those in. The part that was the toughest was the GT valance part and getting them to come out those holes. The straight pipes don't give you much room to work with the leaf springs and gas tank, but I was able to do it. Otherwise the GT exhaust tips have the bend already in them so they are probably easier to work with.

why is ok to use clamps some times vs wielding?
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds 8 ай бұрын
The clamps are easier for connecting everything rather than welding. You just have to make sure the clamps are high enough quality to close off any escaping airflow. I may have tp go back and weld some parts of the exhaust. The clamps also allow you to mount the exhaust to the body more easily.

No way to leave the exhaust manifold silver and clear coat with something? Or maybe high temp chrome paint ?
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds 8 ай бұрын
I guess I could have painted it with a high temp silver paint, but I have never really liked how the chrome paint looks on things. Just a personal taste thing. I prefer the matte black low profile for the manifold since it's not headers haha.

On the vent, if you are only doing short runs and cold starts and not letting the engine get up to temp, that will happen. Try letting her run for 30 min or so, then clean up and try the cold starts the next couple days. The initial vapor loss on the oil should clear up fast… if not… catch can.
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds 9 ай бұрын
Ok, I'll definitely give that a try! Whoever had the engine before just had a completely closed oil cap on the valve cover, so I switched to the breather cap. Thanks!
@Gogogorush
@Gogogorush 9 ай бұрын
@@VanHoutenBuilds the breather cap is much better, I have a 73 Mustang project with a 302 and the previous owner did the same which caused too much crank case pressure and leaked from the rear main seal, put the breather on and now the leak is nothing but passive wetness. Which is how I figured out about the vapor loss - mine did the same thing initially.

@@VanHoutenBuilds keep it factory correct. Weld all exhaust joints and hangers to keep it stable. The whole gas tank design is very risky. Data on fires and deaths for these vehicles and their drivers is no longer collected.

I know it's spending more money but a pair of shorty headers or high quality tri-y headers would have been better. Increase exhaust scavenging, performance and low to mid range where you'll be driving it most.

But unless you upgrade to an aluminum Edelbrock performer rpm intake manifold you don't really need the headers. Drive it with the manifolds first. No rush.
