Thanks Unfortunately I think you are right. The previous "repair" was more like a bandaid than anything. The seats are way more comfortable but compared to modern seats they leave a lot to be desired.

I’m replacing the foam, burlap n covers on a 1965 Riviera. I may replace the springs while I’m at it. I know the driver side has a broken piece, just haven’t gotten to it. I was going to replace the entire spring assembly but couldn’t find one for this particular car. I counted the springs and the Rivy has an extra spring so I’ll just replace the worn ones instead. This vid was very useful. Thanks for posting.😊

You are very welcome. Once you get in there it will be pretty obvious what needs to be done. Good luck on your Riviera, those are cool cars. Mark

10 years ago when I needed this info, it wasn't there. I had to cobble together the methods from sofa upholstery videos, but it's basically the same sinuous spring.

Enjoyed the video.I have a pair of Camaro bucket cores in my future project plans. Striped, sandblasted and painted, but that's as far as they've gotten.. Gonna be a while before I need them. I rebuilt a set of Chevelle buckets about 15 years ago. Instead of burlap, I used a piece of vinyl as the base material on top of the springs, and hog ringed it. That's the toughest part- hogrings! Gotta have a strong grip!
@FoothillPaintandFabrication
@FoothillPaintandFabrication Жыл бұрын
Thanks Charlie. Yes you do, my hog ring pliers are cheapies making it even worse! What year Camaro are you working on? Mark
@charlieseidelmann6702
@charlieseidelmann6702 Жыл бұрын
@@FoothillPaintandFabrication yes, I have basically the same brand of pliers. The Camaro is a '67 RS. It wasn't much more than a very rusty shell when I got it in 2005. Missing just about everything-no motor and transmission, 6 cyl, PG, stainless trim, rear window, no backseat or instrument cluster, radio, steering column. No differential. Parked it until 2018 when some disassembly began. Slowly coming back from the brink of extinction, lol.

I don't upholster but my mom did and I did most of her hard labor for her years ago {removing and replacing the seat covers} You put the seat bottom down on a carpeted floor-climb on- use your knees on the front edge of the steel seat frame to compress the springs- then you can put hog rings in VERY easily. back down the frame-knee on each side towards the rear to do the same on the side hog rings.

Now you tell me 😁 Like you I am not upholsterer but I got it done. Nice that you helped out your mom and got to work together.

I use to work the seat line at gm we had a press come down witch pressed the seat frame down to make putting the seat covers on easier, then steam the seat to take out wrinkles

I bet you made thousands of seats over the years. It gets hella hot here in the summer so I figured mother nature would get any wrinkles out. I could have used at least another pair of hands for sure, unfortunately the dog didn't want to cooperate on this one. Mark

So i did my interior for my 68 Pontiac Catalina convertible. Got rid of the front bench seat & bought new bucket seat frames from OPGI, followed a particular KZbin video and put it all together myself. They came out nice, but the rear seat springs were & still are terrible, but i covered it anyway with the new vinyl. I couldn't find any leads on new springs anywhere. Where can i purchase the 9 gadge steel that you used in this video? I would really appreciate any help, thanks.

Het Charlie I am not sure if you got the links you needed or not. Just saw that I did not reply to your request (sorry about that). I can't seem to find the orders but we got the stuff on Amazon. Search for Sinuous Springs and Seat Spring Stay Wire. I used heavier gauge than factory. Disregard if you have it all handled. Mark

Working on a 64 Chevy C10 pickup bench seat…The frames a mess & top frame is snapped in two on drivers side…Someone tried to repair it last time it was re-upholstered, prob back in the 80’s?!? Can this flat wire top frame (the part that gives the shape to the seat) be welded? Past repair, they used those seat clips & “bridged the break” with another pc of 11 gauge rod…I may have to do the same, if “un-weldable.” Any advice/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
@FoothillPaintandFabrication
@FoothillPaintandFabrication Жыл бұрын
Yes you should be able to weld it back together and then tack weld a rod under to help bridge the repair and spread the load. The other option is remaking the rod completely and replacing it. Not sure what the gauge is or how stiff but you should be able to source it. Try welding it and then stress test it to see if the repair will fail. Upholsters don't usually weld so the twist, clip and staple things back together. Mark

Hi Bob, 16 gauge. Here is a link a.co/3XICBr6 You can get really thick 9 gauge but I thought that would be to rigid. The factory wire felt like 18 gauge. Mark
