Glad I watched this video! I am repairing a 66 which has some damage to the taillight panel and I have a spare taillight panel that came with a 64.5 that I am also working on, which was my only reference. The spare panel looks the same as the one you first tried - same color, same issue with width on the top channel, same issue with the side tabs not bent in etc, and straight! So I had been metal working the one in place on the 66 trying to straighten it up to match the spare, and was just about to cut out the current one and weld in the spare one but after watching this, I will persist with the one that is in place. Thanks!

Nice work Joe! Your attention to detail is incredible. I have never gotten this far into a car like you have, but it does remind me of the rebuild/restoration work I’ve done on my old house built in 1900. I have had the walls apart, see from inside to outside, replace or relocate studs etc. making every thing right even it wasn’t when it was built. Really enjoying your series on the ‘65 Mustang. Thank you!

This video saved my rear. Literally. I had this exact same problem and would not have known what to do had I not seen this video recently. I ordered the original tooling tail panel from Mustangs Unlimited and it fit perfect. The other part had a 3 inch gap that I could not bend into place. THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you for providing this video. It has been extremely helpful to me as I am currently restoring a 1966 Mustang coupe. Your video shows even spacing of the weldments on the lower edge of the tail light panel. The spacing looks ok except I have only one recommendation, and that is to double the number of weldments at the lower-outer edges from the tail light panel to the lower trunk cross brace in the area of the outer trunk floor panels. The reason is that loads induced from the trunk floors, frame rails and rear quarter panels are highest in the outer areas. Your weld spacing seems wider than what I have seen on my original tail light panel. The lower center tail light panel to trunk cross brace sees less of those loads and your weld spacing there is less critical and looks OK. Again, thanks for your videos.

Great video, am focusing on front apron and floor pans. I am aware from inspection the previous owner butchered the tail panel and poorly welded a new one, this video will assist in correcting his mistakes. Thanks again for your videos.

Great video - you put it up the day after I welded in my original tooling taillight panel on my 66 mustang. Wish I had seen it before I did my install. The problem you addressed where the quarter meets the drop off and tai panel reinforcement would have been helpful. I hope you include in a future video how you fit the bumper brackets and adjust the holes to get a proper fit. Like yours, my holes are offset and different on each side. Have watched all of your Mustang and Camaro videos and find them very helpful. Looking forward to seeing more.

As usual, awesome work my friend and thanks for explaining the install. Luckily, I picked up an original tooling tail panel so it should fit like the second panel you fit. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I revisited this video since I’m working on this area on my ’66 coupe at the moment. I noticed that the bottom flanges for the extension brackets on the original quarters aren’t in the correct position. I’ll be posting a video to my channel that will explain things. Basically, the tops of those flanges should be even with the trunk floors. The driver side is a lot higher than it should be. The passenger side is higher as well, but not as bad. I have no idea if it was like that from the factory or what. There’s no indication that they aren’t the original trunk floors and quarters. There was work done in the past on the tail panel area, though. Anyway, I’m always finding things that need correcting on my car and your videos are always a huge help. Thanks!

What size holes are you drilling through the panels that your welding through? I've tried 1/4" and that seems too big, I was thinking 3/16. What do you recommend> Also, I'm welding with a Lincoln 140 ProMig 110volt. I've reduced my wire size to .023 from .030. What size wire are you using? It's little things like this that really help us!
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 6 жыл бұрын
I've shard this info in other videos. Depending on the location, I use 1/4-5/16". 3/16" seems a bit small, but it may work in some areas. I use .023 wire for all sheet metal work. Lincoln 140T 110 volt.

I was wondering what method(s) you prefer to cut your panel piece out to fit so well, such as the passenger lower quarter piece?
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 9 жыл бұрын
+Idaho 2nd Gens I initially used the patch panel I had to mark a cut line, and then I used a 3"cut off wheel on my air grinder to cut off the old stuff. When I made the new patch, I placed it over the cut off area of the quarter and drew a line from the inside. I just cut and trimmed from there.

Was that rear panel one that the owner supplied or you had picked up? I ask this because I was wondering if you can return a piece like that after you have tried to make it fit and it is just junk from the start anyway?
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 9 жыл бұрын
+Dave Brittain I had a friend pick up the first one. I had to order the original tooling one and it was shipped from Connecticut. I could have taken the first one back, but I already drilled the holes in it trying to make it work.
